Gday all,

been a forum member for a whole 2 hours and need some help.  I will describe what has happened and what I have done and hopefully someone with a little technical knowledge can give a hand. Firstly I do most of my own mechanical work and although not a mechanic have a good mechanical background.

I took the car out for a drive Sunday morning with the top down, a lovely day!!   When I returned home I tried to put the top back up to put the car away.  Thhe rear cover or "clamshell" moved backwards and both the front  windows went down.   From there nothing happened, the light on the dash bagan to flash and other than some clicking from near the rear seat that was it.   At this point I had a good read of the manual and checked to see if it was not operator error. I eliminated the handbrake switch by releasing the handbrake as the the clamsheel moved backwards, it stopped midway which would indicate to me that the handbarke switch was operating.  The engine cover is defenitley closed.

Here is my dilemma, it states in the manual that if the roof is operated manually you must immediately drive to the nearest Porsche Centre.  Is this only to check what the problem is???  From reading online I then dismantled quite a bit of the rear end and checked and topped up the hydraulic fluid in the pump, it was quite low!   Still no movement other then the clamshell and windows.

Where do I go from here?? I beleive there are a number of micro switches in the rear.   Can someone please help, and or point me in the right direction!!

Cheers Steve

Hi Steve,

Welcome to the forum

Whilst you wait for someone to come along and assist with your question.  Maybe try the rennlist 996 forum?   I would link to it but am unable to do so. If you google  rennlist 996 forum, you will find it.  Lots of experience on that very forum, I'm sure you'll find someone with the same issue and the solution to fix it.

Here's hoping it's an easy fix for you :)

Amanda

Gday oz930,

Yes I have checked all the fuses, all fine. From reading through the forums on rentech there is a mutitude of things that can go wrong with the roof.   I may have to bite the bullet and take it to a specialist for repair. Can anyone recommend a good mechanic on the east of melbourne or towards gippsland?

Thanks Steve

Worth talking to one of our members here. Check out MIKE who is down Warrigal way. Not sure if he does roof problems.

Check members list for his contact details.

Good luck with it

Gday all,

Well I am one happy boy. The left side flap was a little stuck. A quick turn of the manual release and away the roof went.  I am now a roof expert and am stagggered by the simplicity but genius of the roof mechanism.

Cheers Steve

Bingo, I was about to post that you should check the side flaps ha ha, I have had the very same problem.  Its because it is made so that if anthything catches at all it stops.  Everynow and then ist worth just making sure its all neat and tidy where they velcro up.

Thanks to all who posted.   As suggested earlier in the thread I signed up to the rentech forums and posted my problem. After a week and hundreds of views I received no advice from all of the world wide experts.   Anyway in a typically Austrailian "taking the piss" reply, I posted "thanks all for your help, it has been invaluable." Well they are a bit touchy on rentech and I have been barred for life with no chance of this being revoked!!!   Jeez, just as well I didn't post what I really thought.  Again thanks for the help.

Cheers Steve.

Oh no! That is sensitive of them. Crikey!!!

Glad you fixed it without them tho.

As Niko said, this forum is friendly, very friendly in fact and even in the time I've been here its growing larger week by week!

Yes, I have found most aussie forums to be friendly and the members good and helpful people.  I am afraid though that some people from OS just dont get us some times!!

I think it sounds like a case of very very heavy handed moderating.  Surely a simple reply to you to say 'settle' and then a call to ask for the members to help you out would have been sufficient.
