Porsche driver, Jeff David, has won the 2013 Alpine Rally after a tough three days of competition in the East Gippsland forests.

DavidSS18.jpgDavid and co-driver, Grant Geelan, overcame clutch problems in their 911 to win by just over two minutes from Scotsman, Alister McRae, driving a Ford Escort.

In dry and dusty conditions on the final day of the rally, many of the leading crews fell foul to problems and dropped out of the running, or out of the event completely.

They included overnight leader, Alan Friend, who suffered rear suspension failure in his Nissan Silvia, and another former leader, Mike Conway, who broke a throttle cable in his Escort and was forced to miss the day's second stage.

Wayne Hoy and Lisa Dunkerton have finished third in their Datsun 260Z, three minutes clear of the Honda Civic of Brett Middleton and Andrew Benefield, while Luke Sytema and Rowan Woollard rounded out the top five in their Escort.

Provisional results, 2013 Alpine Rally:

1. David / Geelan, Porsche 911, 4h42m12s
2. McRae / McShane, Ford Escort, 4h44m24s
3. Hoy / Dunkerton, Datsun 260Z, 4h48m13s
4. Middleton / Benefield, Honda Civic, 4h51m23s
5. Sytema / Woollard, Ford Escort, 4h53m02s
6. Orders / Taylor, Toyota Corolla, 4h53m49s - See more at: http://www.rallysportmag.com.au/home/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=8209&Itemid=2#sthash.ctXgoYK9.dpuf

Congratulations to Jeff and to Grant, who does this stuff for the sheer fun of it.

Alastair McRae is not the sort of guy to lie down in a tight battle, and it's a remarkable achievement to beat him anytime.

Anyone know why they are running the old car, not the later model 911 that was meant to supersede it?

The event is open to all categories, H68, H81, P81, PRC Modern, Classic Rally Cars and Club Rally Cars, all categories to be pre 1999, 2 wheel drives only. No 4 wheel drive or forced induction cars will be allowed except at the discretion of the organisers, these cars will run in the invited class only and will not be eligible for outright or overall awards.

The Alpine is run by the Historic Rally Association and the general spirit of the event is classic 2 wheel drive cars.  A few years back i remember the cut-off date being mid 80's....but seems it is now 99.

Alastair McRae was leading much of the rally.  He did have a bit of a whoopsie, but pushed on in typical flatout mcrae style.

Trev

I did. Jeff has an Autohaus built 1984 911 that he ran in NZ at Rally Otago this year. He might have left it in NZ to run again?

They had some teething issues with the newer car early on, and it would be nice to know how it's going now. Anyone who runs two rally 911's deserves big kudos. I'm going to have a look at the Otago results to see how it ran.

Regards
