SimonR Posted 22June, 2014 Report Share Posted 22June, 2014 Hi all, I've been looking for an old 911 for a long time. I prefer pre-impact bumper cars (well, let me restate that, my wife much prefers them!) but we can't afford a 911 of that vintage anymore. I've had the opportunity come up to purchase a 912, but it's interstate. Before I commit to airfares and other costs I was wondering whether anyone in Brisbane has a 912 and would be prepared to show it off to me, even take me for a run around the block so I can get a feel for the power/handling differences? Any and all help gratefully received. Thanks! Simon
twood Posted 22June, 2014 Report Share Posted 22June, 2014 I would look harder and maybe wait longer and find a 911-in the long run I think you will be much happier.
SimonR Posted 22June, 2014 Author Report Share Posted 22June, 2014 Sure, but I think that this is an opportunity worth pursuing, if it works out I can probably start down the 911 path again in a couple of years. How did you find the 912?
clutch-monkey Posted 22June, 2014 Report Share Posted 22June, 2014 they are rather slow. what do you want to use it for?
michel Posted 22June, 2014 Report Share Posted 22June, 2014 Simon go to the 912 registry and ask the question there - my 2 cents

SimonR Posted 22June, 2014 Author Report Share Posted 22June, 2014 they are rather slow. what do you want to use it for? I'm thinking commute to work three days a week (or thereabouts) it's only short -- 5 km each way. And out for a run to blow out the cobwebs on the weekend. It would be our second car, but my only one. I'm not super concerned about going fast. We had a type 3 VW for many years, and a 912 has way more bhp than that, and I will eventually end up with a 911 as well. I like the idea of the smaller engine/nimble 912 plus pre-impact bumper. I'm more concerned about reliability really. How hard it's going to be keeping it on the road. That kind of stuff ...

murf Posted 22June, 2014 Report Share Posted 22June, 2014 Simon I have a 66 912 not in Brisbane. For me it was never a money decision. I liked the swb 911 style but the simple 356 engine for reliability. Have driven in both. The 912 handles better. Not as much outright power. Not a load less when tuned correctly an enhanced Turns into corner a lot better. I prefer the drive. Go cart like cornering. Weigh less. I also prefer left hand drive. Look similar. Out sold the 911. May not have been a 911 if not for the 912. My 2 cents. Just check your wife likes lhd if buying one as a passenger. Keep in mind most roads are 60 km most freeways 100. This is essentially my thinking as well. I just don't have any experience to back it up. I'm not looking at this as second best, just a different opportunity. murf Posted 23June, 2014 Report Share Posted 23June, 2014 Simon - if you have had old cars you'd know the perils. If your wife likes LHD another good thing. Never look at any porsche as second best. I liked the simplicity of the 356 - didn't like the flared guards and the way the wheels sat. Loved the 911 shape knew the mechanical pitfalls. So bought what I wanted - drove it daily 100kms for 2.5yrs loved it. Only had 1 issues which was my fault driving in a 48 degree day for 2hrs stop start and fuel vaporised. Great fun car you won't be disappointed. But try to get a drive in one. One sold in QLD recently.
