Purchase of 87, 911 Wide Body Carrera

PORSCHE VIRGIN

Recommended Posts

Good evening Ladies and Gents. By my user name you might have guessed I know virtually nothing about Porsches. However, that is not stopping me from considering buying one. I am a car nut who already owns several cars ranging from the 1950's - 1970's.

One of my clients whom I now consider a good friend has owned since 1990, a 1987 Wide bodied 911 Carrera Turbo that he purchased with 5,000 klm's on the speedometer. The car is factory original. This car has been fastidiously maintained for the last 21 years and still looks like a brand new car. The car still has the original duco (save for one repair on a front guard)and the condition is practically flawless save for 1 - 2 minor paint chips. The interior of the car is pristine and the car only has 216,000 klm's on the speedometer. The car has been regularly serviced. The question is, what sought of money should I consider paying for such a beast. I do not know the number of wide bodied right hand drive 911 turbos that were delivered to Australia, does anyone on the Forum have such information??

My friend has quoted me 60 - 65K for the vehicle. I am not suggesting he is trying to do the wrong thing by me price wise, but I have no knowledge on these cars so I am trying to determine whether such a price is reasonable. The car is bright red with a black interior.

If anyone can give me some guidance in this regard I would very much appreciate it.

Cheers and thanks for your assistance.

ROB.

best off getting a pre-purchase inspection

by a porsche specialist

settle many "arguements" ;)

I agree with what you have said and would conduct such an exercise If I intended to purchase the car. My question is, assuming the car is as good as I have described (prior to an inspection) Is the asking price reasonable??

Hi Rob,

I am a former owner of a 930 so a few things to be aware of.

1) 216000km on a turbo is a lot of K's. they are highly stressed engines so does it have a history of what work has been done to it? I would be amazed if it has got this far without a rebuild of some sort and probably a replacment turbo, clutch etc. I agree with Jnr356 if you were to consider it proceed with caution and get it well checked out.

2) I could be wrong but my understanding was there were no 930's Australian delivered after 1985 when we changed to unleaded due to the crap quality fuel we have, for a few years but I am not sure when they restarted, I didnt think there were any in 1987 though, but again I could be wrong. If you have the VIN number you can check its history on the VIN decoder on AUTOATLANTA web site. This will tell you what country the car was made for and what options it was delivered with. This will determine what sort of money you should pay depending on whether it was Aust delivered or not.

930's are great fun but you need to have some brave pills to drive them on anything but dry roads. The hairs on the back of my neck stand up just thinking about the awesome acceleration...

Let us know how you get on.

Cheers

Hi Rob,

Just to be clear, is the car a 930 Turbo or a 911 wide bodied 3.2 ?

I can help with info on the latter.

Cheers

Danny

Chris you are correct , the last Aussie delivered turbos were 1985

Hi PV,

I cannot speak with any authority on the 930 Turbos, best to heed Chris's comments here, nothing like firsthand experience.

The common wisdom is that these cars are wicked but require far more maintenance that N/A cars of the same era. If you are determined to jump in, negotiate a price, get an independent inspection at your cost and choice of technician and then start the bargaining once you get the results.

Of couse you are now required to keep us all in the loop.

Best of...

I have made some further queries today and am a little wiser. I got confued with the "turbo" badge on the body. The car is in fact a 1987 australian delivered 911 Wide bodied 3.2. It is not a turbo'd car but has a G50 Box, Turbo body and turbo brakes. Apparently this was the only way to get them into the country in 87 due to the ADR's on emmisions etc:

Phil Hearn of Auto Coupes Eltham has serviced this car for the last 20 years and has advised it has been well maintained and looked after by the owner. The car has has had 2 clutches replaced, a rear main seal and any small odds and sods that have been required over the journey and Phil has its full service history since the car has had 5,000 km's on the odometer. Phil has advised me these are rare cars and as far as he is aware only 13 of them were delivered to Victoria in 1987. I may need to check with Porsche Australia to verify this.

Attached are a couple of photos. I know photos usually flatter a car but this car is as good in the flesh as in the photos and is all original save for a repair on a front guard. I am just trying to ascertain whether the asking price is reasonable (60 - 65K) I trust the owner implicitly as I have known him for many years but I have no knowledge on these cars so would appreciate any guidance. Of course, I would get the car thoroughly looked over prior to making an offer.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Cheers

Hi Rob,

I own a 1988-89 model, essentially the same car with a few minor cosmetic changes.

I Can tell you that these cars are quite rare; the main reason being the price when new. The wide body option (M491), was some 30-40K more than a narrow body car, all this in the midst of the "recession we had to have" hence they werent that popular.

Also apart from that you werent getting more,(performance wise) in fact less, because these cars are heavier than the narrow bodied cars. They are essentially identical to a 930 turbo minus the motor.

I have been told that there were about 7 cars (in coupe form) sold each year, less in targas ands more in convertible. (happy to be corrected here)

The car you are looking at sounds great, and knowing the owner and history is a very big bonus when buying any car particularly an older 911.

If you have any reason to question Auto Coupes assessment i am happy to recommend Chris at Weissach Sport in Coburg who looks after my car and also two other wide body coupes that i know of.

The price of 60-65K i think is quite reasonable. I often check and these cars don't often come up for sale, if you have the opportunity to buy one(if thats what you want) get it checked out before it hits the open market.

Hope this helps, am happy to answer any other questions.

Good luck

Danny

60-65K does sound reasonable, 216000km is not overly high for the year but many examples of similar years have less Ks.

The last one I took note of selling was an '89 MY, navy blue with about 120km, sold for $82,000 at RSR Services.

They are quite rare, in 89 I have been told only 7 were inported into Australia, I have the reciept for mine for 192K back then.

They're a nice car but almost painfully gutless!

Thanks to the assistance i received from "Froggy" (Danny) I am pleased to advise I have purchased an 88 Wide Body Carrera. It isn't the car I was originally looking at as I have found a car with much lower km's. I managed to locate an 88 Australian delivered Wide Body Coupe with 71,0000 kms on the speedometer, Midnight Blue in color with a Tan interior.

I should get the car within the next few days and when I do I wil post up some pics.

Cant wait to get the new toy.

Wahoo Rob, congrats!!!

Looking forward to seeing you and the car in the near future, not to mention an update of the avatar! ;):P:D

Nothing like your first Porsche... :)

Kerry

Thanks Kerry. I have been wondering how long it would take someone to have a dig at the Avatar!! I am sure the Porsche will handle a lot nicer than the Monaro for sure!!!

For the last 28 Years I have only ever driven a Holden, so a Porsche will be a new experience for me that I am looking forward to.

Cant wait to meet a few of you people and see your lovely cars.

Cheers

Well done Rob. I hope you get a kick out of it. First Porsche is always a great day. Make sure you have a comfy chair in the shed for hours of staring. :)

Absolutely, thanks Vas. These wide bodies do it for me, looking at a fat ass like that is awesome they are something to behold. I suppose it is a personal preference thing but the rear of these cars is one of the nicest thing I have ever seen on the road.

Congratulations Rob.

A fantastic car (almost bought it about 4 years from the last owner) and ultra rare being a non sunroof M491.

Enjoy it.

Thanks mate, just out of interest, what was it on the market for 4 years ago?? Terry, the fellow I bought it off bought it 2 years ago. I am looking forward to driving her and enjoying the feel of an 80's car on the road!!

Car sounds great, can you let us know roughly what you paid, interested to know what they're changing hands for, not that I would sell mine, just interested!

Hi ML, I ended up lucking out on this car and didn't purchase it. I did however shortly thereafter come across an 88 built (89 Aussie delivered) Wide Body with only 71,000 kms on the odometer in sensational condition so I bought her. She has brought me a great deal of satisfaction in the last 18 months and she drives like an absolute dream. These cars are a classic!!

Cheers
