78 911 SC

Hi Guys,

I originally posted this on a continuation of a other topic, thought I might get more responses here....

Ive found a 78 911SC Coupe 5 speed. Its been converted to r/h drive, 105,000 kms/miles - not sure. He only wants 20K for it, with RWC and REG. It has a really nice interior, sunroof, paint isnt perfect but its ok. The only issue is A/C doesn't work. He has owned it for 5 years, the previous owner had the conversion done. Not sure how many owners though or where it originally came from.

Few questions;

20K good price?

How would I find out history of the car?

He has called it and SC Carrera, is this correct?

This will be my first porsche and leaves me with about 10K for any issues that might arise.

Cheers

The price is good - however as always it's a factor of condition and hence hard to comment on the relevance of the price.

SC stands for Super Carrera so that's right and km's seem low - too low?

Re air con not working don't worry as they never really worked when new. Gain a micro second in performance by throwing it out.

I've learnt from going through this process myself and it's been reinforced by the resident experts on this forum and that is get a pre purchase inspection from an expert. If you need one in your area request advice here and you should get some recommendations for where you can get one.

Got a link to the advertisement?

Look you never really know. I could be wrong however I vaguely recall here is a report you can / could purchase from the RTA which shows how many k's he registered it with each year. I contemplated this about 10 yes ago when buying an older bike which had suspiciously low milage.

OK Anta, firstly go to the forum part for 1978 Carreras and read the posts to "Sage advice Wanted" - same rules apply to you BUT there is a difference in that you have a RWC and Rego (big difference). You should be able to get rego info from VicRoads (presuming it's Vic Registered). 1978 can be a 2.7 Carrera or 3.0 litre SC (Super carrera). 911SC badge on engine cover? SC has fixed rear windows. Service records are what you need to see etc. Won't get any cheaper, hope you have some mechanical abilities (These older cars are easier to rebuild on the run). Parts are readily available, just check the sills and body longitudinals for ant rust. Get a prepurchase inspection if you can. Eligible for Club Permit next year.

Good Luck

Yes, Ive read 'sage advice' many times over. Its currently reg in VIC, its a 3 ltr, it does have fixed rear windows. Its a big move for me, selling my beloved Falcon GT-P, cause the missus said I can only have 2 cars. Also have a SLR5000.

I class myself as pretty mechanical minded, but saying that Porsches seem to be something completely different to what Im used to. As I said earlier I will def get a PPI.

So Im guessing the RWC is the big difference?

Whats your opinion on the KMS?

Thanks for your help guys, greatly appreciated.

Hi,

It really comes down to what specific documentation they can show you. I'd then ring Porche Centre Melbourne, and ask about verifying its actually australian delivered. I did this with my 78SC when I bought it about 18 months ago. They could confirm it was Oz delivered, whete it was delivered, colour and options. This gives you at least a start on verifying its origins.......the PPI (although I have to admit, I did not do that, but knew the car I was buying was going to need money sepnt to get it up to scratch). I did this and now have a pretty reasonble result.

Then, find a good Porsche specialist........( better still, it may be cheaper to marry one !!!) :) :)

Good Luck, and hope to see ou on one of our outings..

cheers

Peter

Sorry, two other quick points:

Kms - Not sure that is an issue. Mine has done 133000 ish

Aircon - The Germans missed two key points. FIrst that you were never going to push much air out of vents that small; and the idea that it could be cold enough to actually cool the cabin, is laughable........sunroof open, windows down; sit back and listen to the sound..!!

Hi Paul,

What's the info with Club Permit? Benefits and which club exactly do you join? Sorry if my question is a low brainer however heard this quite a bit on the forum.

Sorry mate, Club Permit is the Victorian Scheme for "Historic " registration, ie. 25 years and older and limited use.. NSW has a similar but not identical scheme. Check with RTA for details. Can save heaps in rego and insurance costs.

Anta, RWC means it's registerable and safe (unlike the other) so you cah drive it and progressively upgrade/repair and spread out any costs. If you're able to fix the SLR you can fix a 911 and there are plenty of independent workshops in Melbourne. Forget about the indicated mileage, it's not verifiable after all this time. As for the A/C, I'd chuck it. But if you want to upgrade it you cah get kits from the USA, grab an Excellence Magazine ( or www. excellence-mag.com) and airfreight/mail it (not ship).EG.$499 from Zimms at the moment (www.allzim.com). If it was originally lhd, then it was not Australian Delivered, but don't get hung up on that argument, it's only relevant for higher priced cars, with matching numbers.

Cheers

Paul

PS: probably a good time to sell off any Ford, it's only a matter of time before they take off.

PPI is a great way to go. It will answer your questions regarding condition, which is more important than mileage for a car this age. I think it's ok to check out a car personally but can I be presumptuous and suggest the emotion of it all may interfere with an objective assessment? The price seems pretty good. I wouldn't be concerned about the conversion as long as it's been done correctly which a PPI will highlight. Good luck and hope all goes OK.

Glenn.

I think the car you are talking about would be an SC, which ran from 1978-1983 with a 3.0 cis engine, mild upgrades from 81-83 but essentialy the same car from 1978.

1977 was the last year of Carrera 3.0, that was at the time a high perfromance model which is worth probably 50k plus nowdays since there is not many around.

many people are speculating what the SC stands for but porsche has never confirmed the theory "Super Carrera", that was the basic 911 at the time.

911 SC was supposed to be the last 911, and they were going to replace it with a 928 which of course never happened since the model was not popular.

that engine is very strong and can be a very reliable unit depending on compression, oil leaks service history etc, I had one with over 250000 kms on the clock and it was still strong when I sold it.

there are a lot od sc's on the market so don't rush and get it properly inspected.

keep us informed

good luck
