Sherpa Posted 23May, 2021 Report Share Posted 23May, 2021 Hi all, I need a little help from the brains trust. This under a ‘03 C2 Tip, Will that oil leak be from the rough sealant job on the oil cooler, or could it be a bigger issue? IMS/RMS was done 5 years ago. Any ideas? Costas Posted 23May, 2021 Report Share Posted 23May, 2021 Pic could be misleading but that drop almost looks too clear to be engine oil..? Need to de-grease and clean around all the suspect areas and then monitor day to day to see where the first sign of oil appears. In any case you may have no real option but to drop the trans to investigate further. Sherpa

That's what has thrown me too. I should have got my fingers on it. It was street-side inspection, so that was a best as I could do. Probably worth getting it on a hoist I guess. Costas Posted 23May, 2021 Report Share Posted 23May, 2021 As you mentioned, that sealant job could also be sus as well... Get it up on a hoist and it may become clear as day... Sherpa and tomo 1
tomo Posted 23May, 2021 Report Share Posted 23May, 2021 Yes get her in the air and follow it back looks like its been leaking for a while should leave a path to find its origin. Sherpa
Sherpa Posted 23May, 2021 Author Report Share Posted 23May, 2021 Sounds like that's probably the safest bet right now. Thanks guys 👍 tomo and Costas
st3ve Posted 23May, 2021 Report Share Posted 23May, 2021 These engines get very messy at the back when they are leaking for any amount of time, they cop all the blown dust etc and seem to grunge up a lot quicker than a front engine car. As per the others, start with multiple attacks with degreaser until the motor/trans is somewhat clean and you can find the source. That said, trying to seal oil leaks by slathering joints externally with silicone is a pointless endeavour, that's going to want fixing sooner or later regardless. As the oil cooler is an occasional culprit in intermix failures and is only ~$200, I would tend to replace the entire cooler as well - especially if paying someone else to do it. I agree the liquid is very clean to be engine oil though, it looks more like gearbox oil, though not sure the colour of tip oil. The front seal of the gearbox perhaps? Hows your power steering fluid level? Those pipes run over the top right of the engine. Sherpa

Yeah, that bit has me worried. But I’ll get it sussed. Hopefully it’s all simple stuff 😅
