Speaker surrounds repaired

For the mad concours folk (and wannabes like me) -

The door woofers on my 964 had obviously died at some point. This was because the foam surrounds had disintegrated, like in Babalouie's car -

The 1992+ cars were generally fitted with Nokia component speakers, so I ordered a replacement set from Pelican. Upon removing the existing door speakers to replace them, I discovered that my car actually had Blaupunkt drivers, which were part of the M 490 stereo upgrade option - replacements are NLA.

I sent the Blaupunkt woofers down to Peter Keenan at http://www.speakerworks.com.au/ in Sydney last week, and he simply replaced the missing foam surrounds with butyl ones -

Being butyl rather than foam they should last for 20-30 years. The glue job doesn't look the neatest, but apparently the butyl surrounds are very hard to glue to the frames/cones - these ones seem well bonded!

Time to stick them back in the car - will let you know how they sound. Just have to dig out some period cassettes to stick in to the Symphony RDS deck - U2, Lenny, or Aerosmith?

Getting speakers to fit is often the biggest hurdle with these cars, so fixing the originals isn't too bad of a compromise for a lot of people.

Be interested to hear your thoughts on how they sound.

Bruce, I just had a good read of your sig. I think you may qualify as the resident car audio expert.

Cheers Theo but I only have about 33 years experience fitting car audio systems and about 40 years messing with electronics, so I still have a bit to learn ;)

Boyd at total recoil did great work. I sent a lot of ppl his way. He could do new surrounds, recones, the works, and workmanship was first class. Not sure if he is still in business

Hi Bruce,

S2 exhaust was so quiet but had a triple CD set, so use to crank up ACaDCa just before a Comp run.

Now with the 68's sweet exhaust note just left the sound system out and did RS door trims.

I guess that will be your next move T man ?

A small sacrifice in the quest for RSness Mark

Bruce. Total Recoil is still going. Did some cones for a mate.

They have a great rep..

Good to hear, Boyd is still in business and their rep is well deserved

Not really holding my breath for anything special!

The speakers were well deteriorated before I bought the car, so I don't know what they would have sounded like to begin with. It's not really a serious exercise in car audio/SQ, so much as trying to restore basic functionality to these original 20 year old parts ;)

Besides, fitting the woofers with butyl surrounds will have changed their characteristics - from what I understand, a reduction in low frequencies is likely. That's a bit of a shame considering that the bass is likely to predominantly come from these woofers rather than the 4x6 plate speakers in the parcel shelf.

Actually, I might do well to follow your advice from another thread and simply add in a small powered sub - Bruce, do you have any suggestions for a self-contained unit?

I did a 911 a while back but for that I made a mold of the rear passenger foot well and made a custom FG box for a high excursion 8" sub. This car had the rear seat delete cubby, so we put 2 amps in there and one under the passengers seat. It worked well as we had a lot of power to drive speakers.

Bazooka have made tubes for a long time but their are better options. It really is a matter of what will fit without going custom. You can now get very powerful amps that have a very small foot print, so going a boxed sub and seperate amp will get better results.

Not sure if you have any specialists in Newy, but it would be worth a trip to sydney to some where like FXHR studios, as Marty is a great installer and has access to quality products. I know Marty quite well and have seen a lot of his handy work, so he is one of the few ppl I would let work on my car.. Stay away from the chain stores and seek out a specialist. Ask to see photos of their work. If you do see Marty let him know I sent you

Thanks Bruce and Kev - I actually had Marty do a fantastic SQ installation in my (old banger) Camry - Nakamichi head unit, SEAS components and sub, and u-Dimension amps.

I was due to take the car back to have the installation tuned, but moved to Newcastle shortly afterward and haven't had the occasion to get back down to FHRX since, which is a shame - that was seven years ago!!!
