Pinarelloman Posted 9April, 2013 Report Share Posted 9April, 2013 I am looking at a 1986 3.2 Carrera on Friday afternoon. I know almost nothing about these cars. My 911 book has not arrived yet. What do I need to be aware of. What do I check. Oil leaks. Front end rattles/shakes. The wheels look like 928 wheels. If anyone knows of the car, that would be great. Obviously before I purchase I would get a PPI, but I need to rule out the obvious. Here is a link. Please say what you think. http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/porsche-911-carrera-1986-13514272?base=1216&vertical=Car&cr=39&page=4&eapi=2&__N=1246%201252%201247%201282%204294963765%204294963638%201216&num=15&silo=Stock&Range=Year%3a1970%2c1990&sort=Price
Danny Posted 9April, 2013 Report Share Posted 9April, 2013 The photos don't give away much other than the wheels aren't "cookie cutters" they are "teledials". The original wheels should be Fuchs for a 1986 car. From my knowledge "teledials" were available only on 1984 models. Not a dealbreaker if its a good car but should be factored in to the price. Regardless a ppi is a must. Regards Danny
hugh Posted 9April, 2013 Report Share Posted 9April, 2013 I still struggle with dirty cars and bad pictures when people post ads - how hard is it really? It looks to me like an unloved car, has had major mech issues that someone has dropped $$ into and now forced to sell, trying to get back what he spent with the 'specialist'. I would be looking deep into the overall condition of this car - let it set the benchmark and view others for comparison. Best of luck, (please see this as an honest response, hope it helps)
MB911 Posted 9April, 2013 Report Share Posted 9April, 2013 I'm with Hugh, I normally clean my car to within an inch of it's life when trying to sell it. Hopefully he hasn't cleaned it up for sale and it is not normally even more of a dog's breakfast. I've sort of found that people who wash and polish their cars generally look after them mechanically as well, and normally don't drive them like they stole them. The priced reduced $10k is absolute rubbish, I've been watching the market for 12 months and there is no chance this car would sell for $55K. For $55k you can buy a really nice M491 wide body 3.2.In my humble opinion, this is a $45k car (Please see the link below)http://www.carpoint.com.au/all-cars/private/details.aspx?R=SSE-AD-458311&Cr=14Just an observation, good luck with it all, it may be a glamour in the flesh... Simonk Posted 9April, 2013 Report Share Posted 9April, 2013 Hey Pinarello. I don't have much to add other than this car has been on the market for a very long time. Tread carefully. That's not to say it's not a goer. If it comes up trumps, go in hard on the price. The M491 in WA is a UK import and is priced accordingly. Coastr Posted 9April, 2013 Report Share Posted 9April, 2013 The wa car has been around for a very long time. I wonder if being in wa is working against him, or if it has rust issues.
Pinarelloman Posted 9April, 2013 Author Report Share Posted 9April, 2013 OK. All great advice. What gives the WA car away as a pommy import? I do prefer the look of the wide body, so will keep that as a preference, but a really nice narrow body will be OK. We might pop up to Autohaus and see what sort of trade we will get for the Boxster. Simonk Posted 9April, 2013 Report Share Posted 9April, 2013 When it was first advertised, they mentioned in the ad that it was imported from the UK. It actually looked like he'd bought it in for the purpose of making a profit on it as they hadn't owned it for very long. Some signs though are the turbo front seats which seem to be common on UK cars, the lack of child seat anchor points in the rear.
MB911 Posted 10April, 2013 Report Share Posted 10April, 2013 Simon, you're absolutely correct. I spoke to the seller and it is a UK delivered car. That makes sense as to why it is still for sale, I thought it was an excellent price for an Aus delivered car.

The ad refers to it as a 'Super Sport' - that's a UK market name, you just hear it called a 'widebody' or 'turbo body' in Oz.
