Warranty on Used Cayman & Insurance costs

Hello all,

I've been a quiet lurker as of recent times and in the market for an used Cayman S. Some outstanding ones on the market have caught my eye but I just have a few questions...

Before I get grilled about using the search function, yes I have scouted this forum - and I am active on other forums so I am aware of these common sense etiquettes...

1) How much do you pay for your insurance and with who? Ball park figure and if possible age/location area (doesn't have to be specific)/ and market or agreed value...

I have a list of companies i.e. Lumleys (read they're exy now), Shannons, PFA, etc... but would be nice to get a broader idea of the $$$ I'd have to dish out...

2) Anyone know of any used car warranty services for porsches?? I have googled a few and attempted to get quotes but they don't cover Porsche...

I'd be getting a PPI from Porsche but any other reliable places in NSW metro that can do the same? I'm from QLD and moving back to VIC or WA at the end of the year...

I hope I can figure out how much extra I need to spend for these ongoing costs to meet my budget...

Wanna get in on a Cayman ASAP! =)

Thanks,

Paul

Paul, Insurance depends largely on what you are using the car for. If its a daily driver then your premium will reflect that(Higher)

If you are using it as a weekend car, then it will be Lower. I have found Shannons to be very competitive. You may even find Shannons competitive on a Daily driver premium.

Alternatively, you could contact a professional Insurance Broker to canvas your business for you, I have had friends that swear by their Brokers.

As far as an extended warranty, I have always found these to be paper tigers. The only extended warranty I would consider purchasing is from a Porsche Dealer, If I were buying the car from that dealer. It also depends on how old the car is.

I would strongly recommend having a PPI done by an independant specialist that you can trust. This will negate the need or expense of an extended warranty. A Porsche dealer can carry out a PPI and I would consider using one on such a young car as they are familiar with the most recent models as opposed to older Porsches.

Alternatively you could use Autohaus Hamilton in Dee Why who come with great recommendations and know these cars inside out.

Taking special care to identify if the Cayman you are considering isn't one that is in high risk of IMS bearing failure, which is fault on the earlier M96/M97 engines.

Good luck with the search for your Cayman, they are a lovely and balanced little car, especially in 'S' form. Fast enough!!!

My cayman is a weekend toy... insurance for me is about $1000 a year.

Mines a tiptronic, silver S with 32000kms... probably time for a change.. might think about selling it later in the year or early next year.

Not sure what they go for though...

have you driven one yet? They are fantastic! near 300hp and an awesome chassis. Mine has a Carnewal GT exhaust too so it sounds just "right".

Thanks wasserkuhl, Its a 2006 Cayman, 24,000kms... so I suspect its probably one with potential IMS failure. Its tiptronic though, but can't find a manual with options I want, e.g. bixenons, PCM, sports chrono etc... ah well, beggers can't be choosers.

I am factoring around $2000 to fix the IMS pretty soon after buying one... read a post by amanda.

Mike, how come the change of heart? I did see your other posts about you getting the car and driving it back to QLD. I live on the GC... I haven't driven one as yet actually... I'm trying to do my homework with finances first to make sure I can afford one before going out and hassling sellers about testing then finding out I can't buy one...

  • 3 weeks later...

I pretty much bought mine, before driving it! Glad I did too.. it was an original, never had paint, never been in a smash car. (I use a paint gauge to check).

You are welcome to come up and have a look and a short drive of mine. Manual is the traditional choice, but I have to admit I am VERY happy with my tip. I get excellent economy when using in auto mode, but for fun, I drive in manual mode and the shifts are brilliant. It's no PDK, but then it doesn't break either, and I'm not setting lap times to win a trophy.

Change of heart because I have recently started pouring all my time into restoring an old motorcycle... I have to store the car elsewhere, so I can use the garage, then swap back. I could just park on the street, but that just doesn't seem right to me.
