mark123 Posted 8August, 2010 Report Share Posted 8August, 2010 I am looking for a restoration project, a pre 1970 911s or 911T. If anybody has any info or advice I would be most grateful. Thanks
PCM911T Posted 11August, 2010 Report Share Posted 11August, 2010 Large inheritance required to restore a pre 70 911! If you take your time (took me 2 years of waiting for my 1970 911T) you might find a good one. There is always something to improve or refresh, so your need to tinker can be satisfied without a full resto. Take Jim Richards advice " buy the best one you can afford".Saves money and heartache in the long run. And SWB cars are much twitchier than LWB, so recommend 69 onwards. Paul M. D-banger Posted 11August, 2010 Report Share Posted 11August, 2010 Hey Paul, Is there anywhere in particular to look, for long bonnets on sale, besides the usual carsales, drive, and porscheclassics? There is a nice 72 911 S 2.4 at Duttons, but it's a bit beyond my budget. I can easily see why your search took 2 years. Doug

Thanks for reply Paul, I've already been searching for a while but prepared to be patient. I was going to ask the same as Doug and see if there was any places to keep an eye out. What about importing a car?
PCM911T Posted 12August, 2010 Report Share Posted 12August, 2010 Start with the Australian TYP901 Register, www.typ901.org.au worth the $50 subscription fee. You can access the site but not pictures without paying, but it's worth being a member if you are interested in early models. I'll have to talk to Kerry about the PCV Early Register. Early 911S Register(USA), DDK Forum ((UK), Rennlist forums. If you can't find them thru Google let me know and I'll copy my bookmarks. Early 901s are increasing in price but it is not necessary to pay $80,000 for them, they are obtainable in the $38000 upwards range, good ones are in the mid $40000 plus range(excluding RS of course) Importing? NZ has thrown up some bargains lately, UK NO!! Rust is the problem. California cars - maybe. Local cars preferred. Healey Factory often have them and see www.brooklands.com in melbourne has had a yellow Targa for 2 years. It's cheap but probably needs money spent on it. I can recommend an early specialist to check one out if you find one. Paul M

Cam Arnott Posted 15August, 2010 Report Share Posted 15August, 2010 Mark Paul is right these things can swallow a heap of cash! I hope you're handy on the tools Mark Poole in Adelaide (Mark Poole Motorsport) is a good source of panels + bits. He might also know of a project lurking. Keep your eye on the various Porsche Club websites as well. Good luck

D-banger Posted 17August, 2010 Report Share Posted 17August, 2010 Hi Mark, Always a good place to have a look as well... Kerry Yeah Kerry, I have often looked at that site. A great range of early 911's, though many seem to be US imports. The site has POA for price so I have never found out what their pricing is like. mark123 Posted 17August, 2010 Author Report Share Posted 17August, 2010 Thanks for the advice and information all. What are the pit falls of imported cars from the US? I've seen some great looking early 911's from dealers, not private that claim to be fully restored, to be believed or not. www.thesamba.com also has a varied selection of early porsches too. Has anybody been through a succesfull/unsuccesfull importation? Thanks....

mark123 Posted 4September, 2010 Author Report Share Posted 4September, 2010 Came across this 68 911L, a US import for $7500 US ono. It's not in great condition but the type of state I'm looking at starting a project from. Looking for an educated eye to give a bit of advice... PCM911T Posted 5September, 2010 Report Share Posted 5September, 2010 Mark, this reminds me of a UK E Type Jaguar I once saw. The proud new owner brought it to my friends workshop and asked the adjoining panel beater to "have a look". To his surprize the panel beater picked up an electric drill and drilled a hole in its front guard. The guard shattered - totally rusted out. 30 minutes later, there was nothing but a rusty chassis. The whole car was riddled with rust. The mechanicals sold off and one very sad "owner" . My advice is walk away from this one. There is a cheap Targa on the PCV site, a little rust but a better starting point and it's drivable. Cam Arnott Posted 5September, 2010 Report Share Posted 5September, 2010 Mark Its a bit hard to tell from the photos due to their size but it looks like a big hole in the ground in which to pour money! It appears to be a US car from a ocld climate as it has the webasto auxillary heater in the smugglers box. This is a bad sign to me as if its come from somewhere that cold they would have been salting the roads. You could easily spend $50-60K plus making this a nice car but it will always be an import LHD car and not worth the cost to restore in our market. Sorry to sound harsh but in my humble opinion a car like this is just worth the time and money to fix. If you can find an original right hand drive car you will be miles in front from a resale point of view. A rough Oz delivered car will be a lot harder to find but will repay your resto efforts in the long run. Matching chassis and engine numbers are a big plus as well. Jason Pascoe at Porsche Australia can verify this for you. I would phone some of the independant Porsche guys around the various states to see if they have any cars that need some love or know of any tucked away! Good luck and happy hunting! PCM911T Posted 6September, 2010 Report Share Posted 6September, 2010 Mark, have received further info. This car has been for sale for a long time and the word is to be very wary (ie: needs lots of work and would need to be very much cheaper)! Cam Arnott Posted 18September, 2010 Report Share Posted 18September, 2010 Hi Mark On face value for the money it doesn't seem a bad price for a lefty. Always hard to tell from photos though. The missing door pockets will set you back around a grand though! If you are serious about buying it get a Pre Purchase Inspection from someone like Phil Hearn at Autocoupe or Spencer Harrison at RRR. Hopefully you can still have a test drive on JSV's dealer plate? Good luck!

Good luck! Hi Cam, still searching!! There is a 1969 Targa that looks interesting and the price seems reasonable. It's a californian so would need to import. If I sent you some photos I've been given would you be interested in having a look over them for me, see if there is anything that stands out. There are too many to post on the forum. Thanks Cam... Cam Arnott Posted 12November, 2010 Report Share Posted 12November, 2010 Yep - always happy to help. There are a few on the TYP901 Register that are a whole lot more knowledgeable than me though. Its well worth the cost of membership believe me. Cheers Cam
