Caledonian Posted 6December, 2013 Report Share Posted 6December, 2013 Now I know there a various opinions regarding this product, this thread is not intended to be another debate on the subject. After contacting the Swepco distributer to see if I could find somebody locally that sells it. They put me on to Vintage Racing Parts (Somewhere in Brendale), I gave them a call and spoke to Joe, who was very helpful and while he didn't actually have any in stock he was willing to get some in for me. They are a small independent retailer and of course have to cover their costs, but If they get enough interest he said he could do a 1 US gallon/3.75lt container for $85 (pick up). So if you interested give Joe a call on 0413 724 053 and let him know heard about it here and put in your order. Feedback welcome.
BlitzKonig Posted 6December, 2013 Report Share Posted 6December, 2013 Wow! I was just thinking about this today. Yep, pretty sure I need to do a flush, will get in contact with him
wasserkuhl Posted 8December, 2013 Report Share Posted 8December, 2013 Its good stuff. Just make sure you drain 10k Km's or 12mths whichever comes first. Oil is cheaper than a rebuild. An alternative is Kendal 80/90 but thats harder to get.
Caledonian Posted 11December, 2013 Author Report Share Posted 11December, 2013 Hmmm. so going by the lack of responce Swepco 201 may not be the Holy Grail of transmission oils or is there another supplier in Brisbane?
911oclock Posted 11December, 2013 Report Share Posted 11December, 2013 Has anyone tried Liqui Moly hypoid gear oil? It's German
Caledonian Posted 19December, 2013 Author Report Share Posted 19December, 2013 Got my Swepco 201 from Joe at Vintage Racing Parts today, time permitting I'll put it in over the holidays and see if if does make a difference to my shifting. I did look at the Liquid Moly brand but could not find any real reviews from 915 owners….
Mtheo72 Posted 19December, 2013 Report Share Posted 19December, 2013 Hi Cal', My experience was that there was an immediate improvement to shift "feel" from the Swepco. On the downside I felt that the improvement did subside after about 1000k's or so. Soon after I had turbo (stiffer) engine/trans mounts fitted. Substantial and sustained improvement. Then new shift bushes and set up. Better again. And finally a factory short shift kit (all supplied and expertly fitted by Autohaus Hamiltons). The short shifter is a revelation. Several thousand km's later the 'box is still fantastic. It still needs to be "treated" with respect as any 915 box should but no miss shifts, sloppiness or general vaugness. Hope that helps. Caledonian Posted 19December, 2013 Author Report Share Posted 19December, 2013 Hi Michael I've only had the car since May and although the gearbox was rebuilt by the PO the gear lever was very sloppy. First thing i did was change all the shift linkage bushes, big improvement ! It already had a short shift kit fitted but the shaft swivel part (steel box section bit) was cracked and eventually broke, once that was fixed even better improvement to the shifting. After around a 1500km later the lever was starting to get sloppy again, the poly type coupler bushes had worn already so I got a set of the "Coupler Whisper's" bushes. These bushes are quite hard and have no give whatsoever, they have tightened things up very well but only time will tell how long they last. I've also uprated both the engine and gearbox mounts to the stiffer type, now they really made a difference! As for the oil, i changed all the fluids as a matter of course she I got the car as It had been sitting for some time and after going the receipt for the gearbox re-build i noticed they had used Castrol Syntrax, after some research I found out this was not suitable for the 915 box so i used the mineral version, and apart from being a little baulky for the first few Kms it again improved the shifting experience significantly. I'm not expecting miracles from the Swepco 201 but one thing I have learned about the 915 box is that very small adjustments can make a huge difference both positive and negative. As you said, it still need respect but I find that when driving in a legal but "spirited" fashion the shifting is fine, its only when I'm driving around town or in traffic that you really have to pay attention. Mtheo72 Posted 20December, 2013 Report Share Posted 20December, 2013 Hi Mike, Sounds like you are just about done with the 'box upgrades/mods. The last job for me is to install a Wevo sift coupler. The guys at Autohaus assure me that it's well worth it. I couldn't agree more with your assessment about adjustments bearing differing results both good and bad. For me that applies to every aspect of our 911's. As a life long motorcyclist this is probably the most unexpected bonus of the ownership experience. FYI I am also running Swepco mineral oil in the engine as well. I read a few good reviews of it so bought 20l at the same time as the box oil. I'm not sure I will run it long term as its hard to get hold of and quite expensive. Cheers Michael
Caledonian Posted 20December, 2013 Author Report Share Posted 20December, 2013 The Wevo shifter coupler is definatly on my wish list:) As for the engine oil, after many many hours of research I went for Castrol Magnatec (Semi - synthetic) my decision was based of the recommendation of a local independent Porsche specialist, and balanced against my usage and driving style. So far so good. Cheers Mike
BlitzKonig Posted 31October, 2014 Report Share Posted 31October, 2014 Damn, I should have replied to this ages ago. Got in contact and did the flush with the Swepco 201. I have to say... it made a noticable difference, couldnt engage or disengage 5th very well and that has been improved (not completely removed, but reduced). General gear engagement also feels much nicer. About to do my second run with it.
BlitzKonig Posted 31October, 2014 Report Share Posted 31October, 2014 And I just contacted Joe, but they are no longer stocking it he suggested it was becoming too costly at almost 160 per bottle. Sad... time to find another supplier/source.
DHE11 Posted 4November, 2014 Report Share Posted 4November, 2014 A "where to buy Swepco gearbox oil" thread just started (again) over on Pelican, so I thought I'd put the same info here based on the discussion above. Dan is the local authorised Swepco rep in NSW and I have been getting product from him for the past several years. You can easily get 306 engine oil, 201 gearbox oil and 101 wheel bearing/CV grease through phone or email orders on 0402212796 or at "ordertheoil@gmail.com" To save freight costs and offer fellow Porsche guys in NSW a simpler process I have been holding stock and distributing to the local air cooled guys on behalf of Dan in SYD at Motorsport events, club nights or forwarding via Aust Post. If you want to arrange an individual or group buy, let me know as I'm meeting. Dan this Thursday morning and doing a bulk order for NSW plus some people from other states want some as well. I'm happy to buy some extra cartons and separate and ship out + postage. Can supply the 306 for $55/gallon inc GST and 201 for $85/gallon inc GST while current stock lasts. There is a price rise for all new 201 orders based on lower Fx rate and Swepco pricing adjustment. You will need 1 gallon for a gear oil change, and 3 gallons for an engine oil change and typically leaves some for servicing. I've been running 201 and 306 in my 3.2 and 915 for several years, and track the car heavily and have found it very good, and have helped Dan promote the availability to ensure the demand is enough to warrant Swepco to keep importing the oil in bulk and keep the prices reasonable. Happy to help anyone that wants any, or has questions. Darien.
BlitzKonig Posted 12November, 2014 Report Share Posted 12November, 2014 Darien, this is amazing news! Thanks for the info. Have PM'd you.
DHE11 Posted 12November, 2014 Report Share Posted 12November, 2014 Hi Evo, Stock arrived last week and half the 306 and 201 has gone already but have put some aside for you. Check your PM. Darien
DHE11 Posted 18November, 2014 Report Share Posted 18November, 2014 Hi Evo Your oil is on the way... Check PM for details. For general info: The freight cost for 2 gallons interstate (NSW-QLD) was only $20.85 via Aust Post. $9.45 for local freight of 3 gallons within the same state Have 3 x 306 and 2 x 201's left in SYD if anyone wants some for Xmas servicing! Next lot of 201 will need to be a large bulk order and has to come ex the USA, and I'm advised lead time is around 6-8 weeks from order date. Let me know if anyone wants any 201 and I'll see if there is enough demand to place a minimum order to get some in stock for early 2015.
