Pauly Posted 21August, 2014 Report Share Posted 21August, 2014 Who here as had their torque tube bearings replaced? Who needs them replaced? If you had them replaced, with what? how do you like them? I have replaced mine a year ago and they are stuffed already. They where FAG 6006rz c4 I know you can get those 'super bearings' but they cost an arm and a leg, I'm looking to keep the stock housings. Right now i've got some experts looking around for me for some bearings that can handle extreme conditions.

tazzieman Posted 21August, 2014 Report Share Posted 21August, 2014 Some interesting observations on the SB site http://www.blackseard.com/site/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=6:944-super-bearings&catid=1:products&Itemid=9 There's always a reason things fail , and the later torque tube cars seem to have had some negative "improvements". Some nasty pics of worn out shafts , I guess eventually all these bits get old. If they weren't such a pain to remove these things would get better maintenance. I'm really not looking forward to my 944 clutch job, one day. The Q remains , why did Pauly's new bearings fail?
Pauly Posted 21August, 2014 Author Report Share Posted 21August, 2014 I thought extreme conditions and "arm & a leg" went hand in hand. No such thing as fast , cheap and reliable When you have a machine shop, you save costs by making things yourself the FAG bearings where $12 each. After speaking to some specialists, I found some bearings, same size but with different tolerances and grease for much higher temps. rated for 12,000 rpm and over 150 deg c $40 each The other ones are $170 each and that's for a whole new unit of the 'super bearings' plus shipping another $100 ish. I'm really not looking forward to my 944 clutch job, one day. The Q remains , why did Pauly's new bearings fail? I don't exactly drive under 3000 rpm.. HA. but it still should have lasted longer!! the original bearings where marked C4 tolerance and my FAG ones are also C4. I made new derlin plastic housings/bushes because the rubber ones broke (as per clarks garage) You can't really install them wrong as the shaft wont go in though the bearings. These ones sound WORSE then the ones i took out!! the only thing i'm funny about is i had to buy a extra bearings because i ruined one by spraying wd40 on one for some reason and it sounded horrid after i spun it a few times. Ozvino Posted 21August, 2014 Report Share Posted 21August, 2014 I have the Black Sea R&D bearings in my 928 - the quality of that product is absolutely amazing, it's expensive but you get what you pay for Dave
tazzieman Posted 21August, 2014 Report Share Posted 21August, 2014 I didn't get those super bearings. I replaced them with the FAG 6006rz c4 bearings. The emphasis on "super" was with respect to your chosen bearings , as advised by "specialists"! Not the SuperBearingsTm product , which personally I'd be inclined to go for. If labour's free , they are cheap for what they do in the grand scheme of a performance car i.e. an aeroplane that doesn't take off.
Pauly Posted 21August, 2014 Author Report Share Posted 21August, 2014 no no, My own bearings. I've spoken to him before about his bearings ect. They are good. I'm pretty sure he uses C5 tolerances I just want to know that there is an availability for a bearings of quality that is a direct replacement for the TT instead of replacing the whole unit. The specialists i spoke to today found me another bearing which are far superior to the 6006rz c4 bearings.

Pauly Posted 11September, 2014 Author Report Share Posted 11September, 2014 I know about them But they're $170 a bearing. Not everyone wants to pay $680 + postage for not bearings. I personally don't either as i know i can get bearings a lot cheaper.
