Mike D'Silva Posted 11July, 2016 Report Share Posted 11July, 2016 So I am looking to buy a parts washer.. in the past I have used a 20 litre plastic drum with kero in the bottom and some old brushes.. but this time I want to buy a washer to hopefully make life a little easier? Also, do parts washers use a solvent based cleaner, or a water based cleaner? I have used raw petrol in the past (works wonders on the parts, but just a tad dangerous!)This one at trade tools, looks OK.. and appears to be made out of metal... from the description given, could I use a solvent based fluid as opposed to water based without damaging the pump etc?https://www.tradetools.com/product-range/machinery-and-workshop/garage-equipment/parts-washers/renegade-industrial-20-gallon-parts-washer-trolley-ripw20g-r This one at supercheap, is cheaper, but says water based only...http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online-store/products/SCA-Parts-Washer-60-Litre.aspx?pid=284715#Recommendations
Fraz Posted 12July, 2016 Report Share Posted 12July, 2016 Hay Mike.I have a washer similar to the metal one from Supercheap. The water based cleaner is fine. Sometimes really dirty parts need to be soaked for a while, however the pump and flow of cleaner works well when combined with a good parts cleaning brush. Had mine for about 10 years, pump is still going strong.
Shady Speedway Posted 12July, 2016 Report Share Posted 12July, 2016 Stick with kero or solvent. Put about an inch or 2 of water in the bottom. However much you can put in without being picked up by the pump. The grease falls into the water and stops disolving. Your solvent will last much longer. Mike D'Silva Posted 18July, 2016 Author Report Share Posted 18July, 2016 I ended up buying this from tradetools.. and I "splashed out" and bought their proper parts solvent too (it must be made of cocaine since it cost drug money to buy).To think that all these years, I have been living like a caveman, using an old bucket and some detergent or kerosene. I strongly urge everyone to buy a parts washer! This one was $220 and can use either a solvent base or water based degreaser. It has a drying rack too. Rob Posted 18July, 2016 Report Share Posted 18July, 2016 And... how well does it work? Some before and after shots, perhaps?
Mike D'Silva Posted 18July, 2016 Author Report Share Posted 18July, 2016 Rob, use your imagination! Before: picture a greasy dirty part. After: picture the same part, except without the grease and dirt
Rob Posted 18July, 2016 Report Share Posted 18July, 2016 Yeah, but that's the same result as the manual method. Where's the bang for your 220 bucks?
