TINGY Posted 8December, 2016 Report Share Posted 8December, 2016 I think almost any reputable steering/suspension workshop could do the job, or tackle it yourself if your decent on the tools.
Port 911 Posted 9December, 2016 Author Report Share Posted 9December, 2016 I have asked two places that specialize in power steering racks, & one of the guys I know well. They have a note on their system not to take them on anymore.I think they had a few that were in bad condition, the guy I know said the last one they did they had to get a new main shaft ex germany.May have to just get a seal kit & have a go. Timm Posted 9December, 2016 Report Share Posted 9December, 2016 DHM in Brisbane sent my steering rack out to Col Robinson and Co to be rebuilt for the roadworthy when I bought my car. They are a bit far away from you, but should be able to rebuild yours as well, or provide you with a rebuild kit.Unfortunately mine did fail again 7 months later, just out of warranty so they couldn't fix it for me. However, they were kind enough to provide me with a replacement shaft seal to put in myself. It wasn't too difficult to do, and it's held up fine in the 1.5 years since. There are a couple of step by step instructions on the Porsche forums, the key to doing a good job is absolute cleanliness. You may run into difficulties though if your main shaft has corrosion or deep scratches on it, in which case you'll have to get it welded and machined, or buy a replacement. Tit Posted 9December, 2016 Report Share Posted 9December, 2016 My rack got shipped off to Sydney for re-furb. I can find out who did it if you want.I think the 964 and 944 racks would be similar (?)
Port 911 Posted 9December, 2016 Author Report Share Posted 9December, 2016 The local work shop that gave me all the good news, was not all that helpful, but I would like to get it all sorted , looking to be a great job for Xmas break, any referrals to steering rack specialist would be greatly appreciated. Plugger2 Posted 10December, 2016 Report Share Posted 10December, 2016 Australian CV Joints and Power Steering in Slacks Creek, Brisbane are very good in my experience. Very competent, no BS, and even very good pricing. Mind you, as the name suggests, CV joints and power steering racks are just about all they do...
