I don't know if I agree with the article though, isn't the engine design until water-cooled different? (than the current engine range)

Yes, the Air Cooled Flat Six from 1963 - 1996 was the Mezger Six.

Post 1996 the first "M96" Watercooled engines appeared.

This article , from what I have extracted is an award for the 2.7 Flat Six's power and efficiency.

Quote :

"The sport engine was derived from the 3.4-litre engine based on the downsizing principle, and together with the PDK transmission (Porsche Doppelkupplung) in the Cayman it offers a power of 275 hp (202 kW) combined with a NEDC fuel consumption of 7.7 l/100 km (180 g/km CO2). Its specific power of 101.6 hp/l means that this six-cylinder engine surpasses the magic limit of 100 hp per litre engine displacement."

This is astonishing that the engine makes > 100Bhp per Litre and can post Fuel consumption of 7.7 Litres/100Km's. (Ok, you'd have to be trying very hard to do that!)

Regardless of the history of the M96/M97 engines foibles this is a good news story for Porsche!

Thanks for posting up the Link.
