Service Opinions

Hi All,

My Boxster is due for it's annual minor service. Since I haven't owned it a year yet, this will be the first time I've serviced it and therefore I have no previous experience or preference.

So, I guess my choices come down to:

Official Dealer

Porsche Centre Melbourne or Porsche Centre Brighton

Independent Specialist

Nine Plus or Weltmeister

I have three questions for our learned Porsche experts.

  1. Do the independents offer that much better value? If not, might as well get the Porsche stamp in the book.
  2. How would it affect resale if the service book is not full of Porsche Centre stamps? (Last two services were done at PCM by the previous owner. Is this really an issue?
  3. Do you guys have any recommendations?

I would think question 2 is not so much of an issue with the older cars as long as it was serviced and maintained regularly and preferably by someone experience in Porsche, but this is a newer car ('06 987 with just over 40K on the clock).

Look forward to your responses/thoughts.

Cheers,

Rob

Hi Rob,

Thats a really interesting topic to bring up. I have only ever had older cars so I have never really considered the issue all that deeply.

I have had a top end rebuild on the 930 I had which was done by Jocaro in Braeside and they have serviced all my cars in the last 8 years even my daily drivers.

But If I did have a car of the age of years I would probably lean towards PCM or PCB.

Thats just my opinion and sure others will see it differently. Good luck with the decision and I will be interested to hear which way you go!

Cheers

Chris

Hi Rob, for my two pennies worth, with those low K's I would probably take it back to a dealer, and out of the two, I would suggest you will probably get quicker service from Brighton. HOWEVER...

I had an issue with my Boxster that Brighton let me down on (couldn't find the fault, even after I suggested what it might be from internet enquiries and it turns out that it should be reasonably well known especially by a dealer workshop) So I would probably lean toward Victoria Street.

On the other hand I go with what Chris has said, JOCARO's found and fixed the fault I had, at half the price the PCB had quoted to just look for the problem without a guarantee of even finding it. I now only take mine to JOCARO for everything including servicing, but mine is a 986 with a lot more K's than yours. But service is excellent and if you book in you will get a loan car all going well if you can't wait for it.

If I was you...I would probably stick with P.C.M. at this early stage in it's life, but keep JOCARO in mind for when you get a few K's on the clock. If it's value you are going for give them both a ring and compare service prices JOCARO is 9587 5664 I'm sure JOCARO's will probably win out. But as I said maybe go to the dealer at the moment.

I think if you were planning on getting rid of the car in the next couple of years the Original dealer stamp in the book would be a better selling point.

Good luck with it.

Hi,

I am also a newbie here, recently owned a 986 Boxster for a few months.

It is time to carry out the 40,000K service and I am looking for a reputable Porsche independent garage in Sydney area.

Grealy appreciated if you can share a few tips here, suggestions and recomendation on the trusted garage that you have experienced over the duation of your Porsche ....

A search in Google shows

1. The Pit Exchange in Peakhurst

2. Autohaus Hamilton in DeeWhy

Do you have comments on the two above, or other recomendation ?

Thank you in advance for your help

Hi ML

Naturally, I have a recommendation. B)

Just in case you didn't notice that I use the Autohaus Hamilton logo as my avatar, I will be absolutely clear and point out that I work there.

However, this quote features on the Autohaus Hamilton website, and I believe it speaks volumes:

“There are many very highly qualified service firms such as Porsche mechanic Autohaus Hamilton in Sydney, which enthusiasts rank as highly if not more so than any of the local dealers.”

John Connolly – The Weekend Australian, October 8-9, 2011

If you want to book your car in, or even just to discuss what needs doing, call Grant or Tim on 9905 1455.
