JAX57 Posted 18December, 2013 Report Share Posted 18December, 2013 hey guys, my SC has doesn't start when engine is hot, I have to wait at least an hour for it to cool down especially on hot days. I've called three different garages and got three different answers. It can't be the fuel pump as it doesn't run rough when it eventually gets going. It turns over but doesn't fire up.Comments were that this is a common issue with older air cooled 911, which is a great help. Any thoughts ? appreciate your help
tazzieman Posted 18December, 2013 Report Share Posted 18December, 2013 The fuel accumulator is the common culprit. Replace ($125 from Pelican , easy DIY job - and see if that works). I had a slight problem developing once which turned out to be two leaking injectors.
clutch-monkey Posted 18December, 2013 Report Share Posted 18December, 2013 i would also suspect starter motor sticking once it gets hot? if so, it's about 10 min to remove and $30 for a autoelectrician to replace the bushings and clean it up and re grease it. Russ Posted 18December, 2013 Report Share Posted 18December, 2013 I had a battery with a dead cell that gave these same symptoms once
Guest hepkat63 Posted 19December, 2013 Report Share Posted 19December, 2013 I know I am only new to this forum, but have you checked the DTE - or swapped it out with another one to eliminate that?
Russ Posted 19December, 2013 Report Share Posted 19December, 2013 if you mean DME relay, I think they started on the Carrera 3.2 and L-Jetronic here's a good thread on the accumulator (when failed it basically gives you vapour lock around your injectors and fuel lines) http://www.partsplaceinc.com/catalog/vw-fuelinjection-fuelpressure-accumulators-gaugekits48.shtml have you had any symptoms until now? JAX57 Posted 19December, 2013 Author Report Share Posted 19December, 2013 Thanks Tazzieman, this sounds the most likely cause. It's not the starter motor as it turns freely I actually had the same problem yesterday RussR, anyway I can quickly remedy the situation before I get the replacement part in? murf Posted 19December, 2013 Report Share Posted 19December, 2013 I've had this happen in my 912 on numerous occasions - more so in the hotter temperature. I also had the fuel vaporise on me - car stopped dead. It was a 46 degree day driving for 1.5hrs. 4hrs later and 1 tow truck - car started and drove perfectly. SteamWolf Posted 23December, 2013 Report Share Posted 23December, 2013 check the connection to the CDI box. dirty terminals or a loose plug can do this. that's what it was on my car anyway.

Carson911S Posted 4January, 2014 Report Share Posted 4January, 2014 Agree that fuel accumulator is almost certainly the issue.
