buddy Posted 1December, 2016 Report Share Posted 1December, 2016 Hello.I have owned my 1999 996 coupe for 5 years. I've just spent over $5k having a few things fixed by a porsche specialist I always use. They now tell me that my transmission needs to be rebuilt. Which they don't do.Does anyone know what this might cost & if someone in Qld can do it ? The issue is the revs slightly fluctuate up n down. They have replaced the MAF sensor & a few other things & say a rebuild is probably whats needed. thanks.
Rod C Posted 1December, 2016 Report Share Posted 1December, 2016 Have seen secondhand trans for sale for as little as 1k if that helps your decision.
P-Kay Posted 1December, 2016 Report Share Posted 1December, 2016 Interesting you say that. Does the fluctuation only occur when you are at a steady cruising speed, but fine every other time?
buddy Posted 1December, 2016 Author Report Share Posted 1December, 2016 Rod C: Wow $1k I need to get myself 1 of those. I will start to do some looking. P-Kay, Yes when you are going down the hi way at 80km the revs slowly hum up n down just slightly. I use the guys at T&D automotive in Brisbane. I find them excellent, honest and reliable, its just that transmissions are not there thing.
WOKA Posted 1December, 2016 Report Share Posted 1December, 2016 The words 'probably' and 'transmission rebuild' in the same sentence suggests further investigation / second opinions are needed.!Wasn't these recently a thread regarding the durability of these transmissions and how how good they really are..? Not a very helpful post I know, but throwing thousands at a 'probably' is potentially reckless..
buddy Posted 1December, 2016 Author Report Share Posted 1December, 2016 Yes I agree. Does anyone in Brisbane know of another reliable mechanic that knows Porsches ?
Peter M Posted 1December, 2016 Report Share Posted 1December, 2016 Definitely suggest second opinion.Did the issue only arise since other works were done?Did they replace the transmission fluid and maybe the levels not right?
buddy Posted 1December, 2016 Author Report Share Posted 1December, 2016 The issue has been there for 6 months. They replaced the MAF sensor thinking it was that, but didn't fix it. Then in between I got the drive light and 4th gear light started flashing which was a $5k solenoid repair. That's now fixed. But the rev issues still needs to be sorted. P-Kay Posted 1December, 2016 Report Share Posted 1December, 2016 This is something mine has recently developed and PCB told me the oxygen sensors were throwing codes. So like you, I have replaced 'logical' items systematically. I obviously started with the o2 sensors and I have progressed through the maf along with the tps. I am not convinced it is the tranny, but am now leading towards a possible vacuum leak. Once I get my SC back, I will pass it onto my mechanic and hopefully his dyno and professional diagnostic tools (rather than my cheap code reader) can pinpoint the problemGood luck buddy and do keep us informed how you go... sandy468 Posted 1December, 2016 Report Share Posted 1December, 2016 5K already shite! I'd be getting it to PCB and then also 2 reputable auto trans specialists (just coz they aint PCar specialists dont mean they dont know most trannies) for diagnosis and quotes. cost nothing for that. and see what the common thread they come up with is
P-Kay Posted 16December, 2016 Report Share Posted 16December, 2016 Further to this: Mine has just been diagnosed with the transmission, specifically torque converter and rather than purchasing a second hand unknown. I have opted to rebuild the current. Merry Christmas
buddy Posted 16December, 2016 Author Report Share Posted 16December, 2016 Really . Are you in Brisbane ? Because I need to find somewhere to get a 2nd opinion and have been too busy to do anything about it. Have you had a quote yet too ? Thx
