Also no idea on the brand, i would assume its genuine but don't quote me on that. Stuart from Nine Auto might know. I think it was fitted by him.

I've only had the car for 1 month now.

Not having driven any other P car other than mine after I purchased it, I thought the stock  996tt box  / shifter was pretty direct, short but a bit knotchy.  Found out on a service that I have a gemballa short shifter.  However, from the get go, my first mod / purchase for my 996tt was going to be a 997 complete shifter mechanism.   I spoke to a US tuner who drives / sees a fair few 996 tt's and he talked me out of a short shifter (997 gt2rs or 996 cup, not withstanding I already had one) and said run with a stock 997 shifter unit.  He said it has 15% shorter throw than a stock 996 shifter and in his opinion was much smoother  (he used the word butter) for all round driving particularly with new fresh plastic (your bits are closer to twenty years old).  Brought one, yet to install it (eg will do it when the clutch goes in) so can't confirm on the butter smooth comment

  • 3 weeks later...

The genuine Porsche SSK for the 996 is black and has the Porsche part logo etched onto it (Its made by B&M) all others are aftermarket. The 997 genuine SSK has a silver plate on the side of the shifter and has its own part number. The 996 shifter could only be purchased as a part to be installed into the 996 assembly as opposed to the 997 which came as a complete unit.

I'd buy a 997 stock shifter assembly (or any 997 unit you can find IMO), its what i've got in mine and its awesome, no slop and only slightly shorter then the standard 996 one. Check out US ebay for them, they are also really straight forward to install if you're handy.

Not sure what the 996 cup is like but it sounds goooood!

I might get the 997 shifter kit, unless someone wants to swap for my one? It really takes the joys out of driving the car when its this stiff and hard to change :( i feel like i need to go to the gym to work out to shift easier lol.

btw i had a look at my shifter and it seems to be a legit porsche short shift kit.. i dont know if that means anything. Would i need to maybe adjust the cables?

It doesn't mean much, there are adjustments you can make to the cable ends. You need the green shifter alignment tool and then to remove the console to use it.

Yes it will help the shift be less notchey.

There are the two shifter cable ends that you lay the two shifter ends that control the movement. These have fine threads that allow you to pull the cable further in or push it further out. That's the adjustment that can be made.

It's the first thing I'd check before looking any further because it will only cost you $20 and your time also its a tool you can keep.

I'll find a pic for you soon. If that doesn't work I'd recommend an oil change then failing both of those options you'd need to consider a rebuild or replace but that's in extreme situations. Or it could also be failing transmission or engine mounts too.

Might be able to borrow one from a Porsche specialist but to be honest they are only $15 or so,  it's worth owning one.

As for the process I have a step by step document I can upload for you and I did this while ago but can still remember the steps if you need help.

Where are you based? What shifter are you going with?

Cheers
