DAZ Posted 10December, 2018 Report Share Posted 10December, 2018 Hi, had red book and car sales organise a pre purchase inspection of a 987, all came back ok except for one thing. Abnormal engine noise on cold start up, any thoughts or ideas what this could be or what questions I now should ask etc. (update IMS bearing hasn’t been replaced). Peter M Posted 10December, 2018 Report Share Posted 10December, 2018 "Short rattle on start up" is usually a lazy cam chain tensioner. Suggest you call your favourite Porsche mechanic for a chat.
DAZ Posted 10December, 2018 Author Report Share Posted 10December, 2018 Thanks, don’t have a favourite Porsche mechanic lol, is it an easy fix, or a early symptom of larger potential problems!?
Troubleshooter Posted 10December, 2018 Report Share Posted 10December, 2018 Report also reads "no service history present at the time"... does that mean the car has no stamped service books?

I once got caught out with this - full set of history was in the glove box....ppi place didn't bother to look.
DAZ Posted 10December, 2018 Author Report Share Posted 10December, 2018 Does have full service history owner told me he had removed it before inspection and all up to date had full service done mid October here https://www.gilbertsmotorgarage.com.au/

Sorry, I don't know enough about Boxsters to give any useful advice but I would think you have a great price bargaining tool with that PPI. If you intend to replace the IMS bearing, you'd probably do the tensioner(s) and drop the engine out at the same time. Since the car is in the Hunter Valley, suggest you call my favourite Porsche mechanic, Simon at Autowerks in Wyong for advice. Otherwise keep looking as there appears plenty of choice and maybe even something closer to home! Good luck.
Mike D'Silva Posted 10December, 2018 Report Share Posted 10December, 2018 My personal opinion; if the noise isn't that loud, I'd offer $5k less, and just drive it.
Buchanan Automotive Posted 10December, 2018 Report Share Posted 10December, 2018 It could be chain tensioners as Peter has mentioned or it could also be chain tensioner pads coming apart causing more slack in the chains. if its the tensioner pads then its rebuild time. regards Sean
DAZ Posted 11December, 2018 Author Report Share Posted 11December, 2018 Thanks all, owner says he’s never heard a noise, and won’t negotiate further, so am giving this one a miss, search continues...
Goon Posted 18December, 2018 Report Share Posted 18December, 2018 The myriad of rattling noises that come from behind the drivers head is enough to scare the uninitiated prospective Porsche owner. Get a PPI from a well-serviced car and you can't go wrong.
