Stephen Tinker Posted 13February, 2019 Report Share Posted 13February, 2019 Anyone on here replaced their 996 GT3 gearbox oil? The factory replacement fluid (Mobil PTX 75w90) is only available in 20 litre drums which is 16.5 litres too much and costs the equivalent of an arm + a leg. I know there are many 75W90 transmission oils on the market, but some are a lot better quality than others. Over in the US most track hounds use Mobil Delvac which I believe is an America only product. What's the recommendations from GT3 owners who have replaced their transmission oil? . Raven Posted 13February, 2019 Report Share Posted 13February, 2019 There are a lot of threads on this on the Rennlist ,,,,be careful if you buy and alternative brand that has the same 75w90 rating Many of these threadS will tell you how many alternative brands of oil even with the same viscosity figures do not work well with the Porsche Gearbox ,,many ownerS complained of poor shifting issues and were generally unhappy .. When I did my 997 C2 S transaxle I purchase the recommended factory oil from my local dealer ,I believe it is a shell oil repackaged in Porsche bottles the 997 need 3 liters from memory .. I was going to import the Mobil PTX from Suncoast porsche in the U.S as it was cheaper than the Factory OEM oil at my local dealer . In the end I just opted to bit the bullet and pay the steeler price to avoid any potential Dramas ,I now the Dealer is ripping me off blindly as the OEM oil was priced ridiculously ,,but it was piece of mind as gearbox works perfectly .. Do your research an see what works for you ,,,,just stick to the factory recommended brands ..
Peter M Posted 13February, 2019 Report Share Posted 13February, 2019 Stephen, While not specifically answering your question, you may find this interesting as it discusses viable alternatives to PTX: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/1008772-g-50-trans-fluid.html

Raven Posted 13February, 2019 Report Share Posted 13February, 2019 Do 996 GT3 use the Aisin G97 type transaxle or is it a beefed up variant made by a different manufacture better suited for hard track use..

I don't believe so. The GT3 gearbox (Type G96.96 in my case made by Getrag in Germany) and is also used in the GT2 / TT and Cup / RSR Cars. It has a dedicated oil pump & external oil / water intercooler with a LSD. There are lots of internal differences too as the main shaft and individual gears that can be changed for different ratios. So you can see that the last thing I want is to choose the wrong lubricant as an overhaul of the transaxle will cost a fair amount of money..... Raven Posted 13February, 2019 Report Share Posted 13February, 2019 Yep totally different unit to Aisin............I now what you mean about the wrong oil I went through that with mine as I said and was unhappy with the price Porsche was asking for the oil ,,,,but after seeing how difficult it was the get the oils every one on rennlist said to get i ended up just going to the dealer ,,, Just didn,t want to take the risk as I had read many horror stories about shifting problems and noisey gearboxs due to inferior products being used .. Try ringing a place like Auto Haus..PR Tec or Auto werks eg a dedicated local Porsche specialist and get their advice ..I now Auto haus and PR Tec do a lot of track prep for GT3 owners who compete at club level motorsport as I see them at State sprint rounds every meeting .. James P Posted 13February, 2019 Report Share Posted 13February, 2019 Its pretty simple just use whats recommended like PTX, SHC or Delvac all in 75W 90 The 996 Cup workshop manual recommends SHC 75W 90 so thats what i use & the road going GT3 has the same gearbox
Stephen Tinker Posted 14February, 2019 Author Report Share Posted 14February, 2019 Thanks guys - I'm going to do some more digging to see what is on the market without buying a 20 litre drum. I worked for Esso Mobil for many years so I'll see if I can speak to someone and find some 2019 equivalent lubes that can be bought off the shelf here in Oz. Peter M Posted 14February, 2019 Report Share Posted 14February, 2019 Stephen, Love your due diligence but think you are making heavy weather of this. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Motul-Gear-300-75W90-Gear-Differential-Oil-1L/163375853874?epid=244529921&hash=item2609f5b132:g:tvoAAOSwvhxb7dIx
spiller Posted 14February, 2019 Report Share Posted 14February, 2019 My shop puts Delvac in my cup car, many on rennlist seem to use the same. Shifts are nice and smooth. I didn’t know the box was made by Getrag...you learn something new every day.
