Niko Posted 22February, 2013 Report Share Posted 22February, 2013 If you happened to read the H.S. Cars Guide Friday supplement, you may have noticed the cars they believe are in the same ball park/comparison as the new beetle First comparison. Fiat 500 Second comparison Mini Cooper Third comparison FJ Toyota land cruiser..........what the.........
JustJames Posted 22February, 2013 Report Share Posted 22February, 2013 Niko, without having read the article, I think what they are talking about is cars that hark back to their older forebears. The FJ Toyota harks back to the FJ 40. It doesn't mimic it as shamelessly as the Fiat, VW and MINI mimic their ancestors, but some of the external design cues are deffinly there. It's the whole retro thing. Now, to add some feline to the feathers.... If Porsche had dropped the 911 (as had been planned) when the 928 arrived, but had brought back something like the 996/997, Porsche would be tarred with claims of jumping on the same retro bandwagon. Of course, the difference is that Porsche never stopped making a 911.
Niko Posted 22February, 2013 Author Report Share Posted 22February, 2013 Thanks JJ, I understand what your saying with the retro thing But this comes under the heading "others to consider" with no mention in the article of retro at all. FIAT 1 liter 2cyl turbo $22,990 MINI COOPER 1.6 liter 4cyl $26,500 TOYOTA FJ CRUISER 4 litre V6 $46,490 New Beetle 1.4 litre 4cyl supercharged $29,990 But definitely agree all four of the cars have done the retro thing. I think someone should have hit the button for a Corolla or similar and accidentally hit the FJ Cruiser button. But maybe the retro thing is what it,s about. hugh Posted 22February, 2013 Report Share Posted 22February, 2013 I can't say an FJ crossed my mind let alone made the short list when I went out to buy my fiat. Fuel was the main thing on my mind.
