Hello Thrillseekers

Its almost that time of year again for another burning of the fossil fuel festival.

This years Phillip Island Classic is to be held from Friday the 18th to Sunday the 20th of March.

So to quote one of our famous Aluminati, "Its time to stick it in your pipe and smoke it!"

Last year's Sunday morning get together at Tooradin for a PFA convoy to Phillip Island was pretty cool and to have our PFA group trackside at the Southern Loop was even better. Even though we were all led to distraction after about an hour and wandered off in different directions...

This years festival will include "a flotilla of significant sports cars spanning three decades coming out especially from the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart" for the 60th year of Porsche in Australia. Better bring the Polaroid! ;)

So who's up for a great day trackside at one of the worlds greatest race circuits?

Hi Frank,

I would not mind gooing myself, but won't know about availability until closer to the date.

The event promo says "The race will see at least three Porsche 956/962 sports cars, up to four Porsche turbocharged six-cylinder 935 coupes..."

Rare Museum Porsches headline 2011 PI Classic

Rare sports cars spanning six decades are heading from Germany’s Porsche Museum to the 2011 Phillip Island Classic Festival of Motorsport from March 18-20 to celebrate Porsche’s 60th anniversary in Australia.

The headline act of the collection is the 935/78 coupe nick-named ‘Moby Dick’ by Porsche race mechanics because of its large and extended ‘whale tail’.

Based on a production 911 body shell to Group 5 regulations, Moby Dick was with climax of 935 race car development. Powered by a 621 kW (845 hp) turbocharged 3.2-litre six-cylinder development of the production 911 engine, it reached 366 km/h at Le Mans in 1978.

Perhaps the most recognisable of all Porsche racecars – the famous 956/962 which won the Le Mans 24 Hour seven times between 1982 and 1994 – is also part of the exclusive collection that will be seen at the Phillip Island Classic in March.

The car secured for Australia is the Rothmans 962 raced to victory in 1987 by Derek Bell, Hans Stuck and Al Holbert.

From the 1960s comes the eight cylinder 908/02 Spyder that won the 1969 Targa Florio and the 718 RS 60 Spyder that won the 1960 Daytona 24 Hour race.

Other special Porsches in the collection include the lightweight 911 SC raced by Walter Rohrl in the gruelling 1980 San Remo rally and a V10-engined Porsche Carrera GT road car from 2003.

The Porsches will all be demonstrated at the Phillip Island meeting, which has again attracted a huge entry of more than 500 sports, racing and touring cars for the third consecutive year – more than 30 of them from overseas.

Another highlight of the 2011 ‘Classic’ will be the 30-minute sports car race on the Sunday that will see at least three Porsche 956/962 sports cars, up to four Porsche turbocharged six-cylinder 935 coupes, a V8 Sauber-Mercedes C9, an ex-Le Mans JCB Chevron-Cosworth V8, a GT40 Ford, and a number of V8-powered Lolas from the 1960s, ‘70s and ‘80s compete over 20 laps of the 4.55km Phillip Island Grand Prix circuit.

Other races on the program will include events for Historic Group N and the later Group C and Group A touring cars, an event for sports 2000s, and races for historic racing cars.

The meeting will also mark the 40th anniversary of the Falcon XY GT-HO and the 50th anniversary of the E-type Jaguar with a number of these vehicles amongst more than 250 special cars on display.

The 2011 Philip Island Classic Festival of Motorsport is organised by the Victorian Historic racing Register and will again be supported by Shannons, CoolDrive and Penrite.

  • 1 month later...

When I last was at Porsche Centre Melb I put in the suggestion Box that when they ship the Museum cars they should include a 918RS !!!

If it isn't a classic now, it certainly will be !

Cheers, Mark.

Gday Fig

Last year a few of us made a time to meet at the car park on the left hand side just after the bridge in Tooradin.

When we got to the P.I circuit the place was already packed along the main straight so we went down to the southern loop. A good spot but a long walk to the paddock.

Your 78' SC would look the part on the day ;)

To those wanting to head to the Phillip Island Classic in convoy...

Last year we met in Tooradin, on the Sth Gippsland Hwy, as there were cars joining us from the city, the Mornington Peninsula and the Dandenongs.

We met at 8am for an 8:15 start, but I don't think we got away til 8:30 ish. Seems like the preference is to get to the Island a bit earlier to get a better parking spot.

I can only do Saturday (sorry Chris :( ) how about meeting in Tooradin at 7:30am for 7:45 departure to the Island???

Who's interested???

So far from the above posts it looks like,

- Doug (80%)

- Kerry (80%)

- Spence

- Froggy (Danny)

- Red

- AndyS (??) make sure you bring a cap B)

-

Doug

Ola Dave

Have fun in Mexico, business or pleasure?

The La Carrera Panamericana is on in October 21 - 27 this year.

Would be a great event to experience.

Frank

We are here for three months to see whether or not we may move over here.

Like it a lot and have had a look at a number of houses in Cancun and will make the decision when we return to Oz whether or not we go ahead with it.

To be honest with you it is very tempting. We realize though it is not everyone's cup of tea.

Roads are pretty rough for Porsche's and you possibly would stand out a little in the crowd.

Having said that Porsche has a very modern presence on the road out of Cancun to the airport.

I will try to remember to drive by and take a couple of happy snaps of the site.

We are currently driving a little Nissan Platina that we bought from the local public car sales market. A bit of a risk but hey who cares you are a long time dead.

Enjoy the run down to the Isla. It usually is a bit of fun.

Kerry & I have a PCV dinner to attend on Friday night at Duttons for their 100 year celebration.

It's not going to be an early night so that's why we put 80% chance of attending early Saturday morning.

Given that a few others also can't make down early, maybe we should all make our own way down.

Any thoughts...AndS, Red?

Good morning to Douglas and punters,

Happy to meet & convoy to PI Sat morning, I will aim for 7:30 at Tooradin and see who arrives, I will have been on the road for an hour or so anyway so I will stretch the legs. I usually use the Pakenham route but will pass thru Cranbourne this time.

The weather looks kind so far but I will bring sunscreen/hat/coat/gloves/wellies just in case wink.gif . ..and of course a camera.

Enjoy the dinner.
