Vic speeders

Getting off topic now, but in the US the fatigue is some of the worst in the world for regional airlines. This is due to pilots normally working multiple jobs since they receive extremely poor wages and more often have higher workloads as well as being placed in more stressful situations. Anti-fatigue rules came in earlier this year so we will have to wait a little while to see what effect they have had on industry.

Still kind of OT but back on the ground, there was a study a few years back where a town in Holland had all of its speed and traffic signs removed. Drivers actually drove their cars and watched their surroundings and other drivers instead if trying to read all the signs and watch the speedo. The result was smoother traffic flow and less accidents. Food for thought.

Aviate. Navigate. Communicate.

Though speed in aviation is more tightly managed than in cars, so your point is a little wobbly.

Imagine if driving was like flying. No one would ever drive their car with low oil or fuel. They would review their parking arrangements in advance and notify home when they arrived at their destination! :P

Think the law will more likely say inadequate separation or distracted driver before it goes back to the speed camera. Only when it's proven in court that we are paying attention to our gauges more than the road we can finally raise the argument that.

It's sad that driver training isn't like flight training where the number one rule is "fly the plane" everything else comes seconds - that means don't look at guages when there's things you need to be aware of going on outside. That means having high levels of situational awareness when approaching and proceeding through an intersection in a car and not worrying about your possible minuscule speed above the limit as your travelling through.

^^^ This. It just makes sense

Old Ducati's didn't have speedo's just a big Tacho. Watching a speedo constantly, is distracting, and does not make anyone safer. It's very ironic that we all now drive around distracted, looking at our speedo's, watching for speed zone changes, speed traps etc and that's in the name of keeping us safer. So we have made everyone drive slower but because they are constantly worrying about being a few K's over, we are having more minor accidents. How exactly does that make us any safer ?

I have a 2 pronged plan to make roads safer that would never be implemented but just may work ;)

1. make everyone ride a motorbike for 12 months. That would kill off most of the bad drivers, making roads much safer and those that survived, would have a much higher situaltional awareness, making them better drivers

2. Ban speedo's and speed zones. You would find most ppl would be a little more likely to actually drive to the conditions

The study in Holland was less about speed but more about distraction. Removing all the signs allowed full concentration on driving safely. Just like walking thru a crowd, drivers naturally avoided each other and the pedestrians, cyclists etc.
