Buying Your First Boxster

Hi Guys & Girls,

Flew down to Brisbane on Monday to potentially buy a Porsche Boxster S I had been looking at and talking to the owner about for the last month or so.

Arrived at the Porsche Center Brisbane around lunch-time to check on the results of the pre purchase inspection I had arranged the week previous.

The vehicle concerned was a 2000 Boxster S, 6 speed manual with 40,000 on the clock and described as immaculate condition.

Never, ever, contemplate buying a used Porsche without getting a PPI done by a reputable company is all I can say regardless of the kilometres and "condition".

The car sounded good in the original advertisment, low kays, spotless paint, as new tyres, new clutch and flywheel, new wheel bearings and drive shafts ect.

The PPI uncovered a nasty noise coming from the gearbox, (expensive) CV boots needed replacing, faulty seat belts, mismatched tyres, in fact one of them was a run-flat off a Mercedes and we all know how expensive they are to replace!

The hood was not closing properly, wheel bearings where noisy even though they were supposed to be new, and the list goes on.

All in all approximately $10,000 worth of repairs and that was on the conservative side. Who knows it could have been a lot more once things were pulled to bits.

I cannot praise the staff at Porsche Centre Brisbane high enough for their expert service. Saved me a lot of money in the long run!

At this point I was feeling a little disappointed considering I had travelled a long distance and forked out no small sum of money only to find that everything I was told by the seller was not entirely accurate.

But their was a silver lining to a otherwise dreary day. Sitting on the show room floor was a very nice Guards Red Boxster S with full service history, sold and serviced since new by the Porsche Centre Brisbane.

After Steve had taken me for a rather spirited test drive I was hooked and happy to say I am the now the proud owner of a 2001 Porsche Boxster S!

The drive home to Rockhampton is a memory that will live with me forever!

The moral of the story? Their is light at the end of the tunnel!

Cheers,

Allan

Congratulations Allan,

The Porsche Centres always know how to make you feel better. ;-)

Hope you have a ball with it. You should have plenty of opportunities to drop the roof up there.

Don't forget to post some pics.

Cheers,

Sandy.

Well done Allan, welcome to the ranks of the COXSTER. It beggers belief that the 40,000 car had that many faults. It has had an xtremely hard life or someone is kidding with the kilometres. Thank god you got the report done. I've had mine (2001S) for just over three years, and as you probably know treat em good and they will stay good. No real problems with mine, apart from wear and tear, brakes etc. Mine has now done 131,000 of which 45,000 are mine. I have thought about getting rid of it lately, and maybe getting into a WRX or 350/370Z but when I jump in, drop the roof, crank up the strereo and go for a drive, I wake up to myself. Your racer red Coxster S sounds sensational Enjoy it mate and welcome to the club.

It isn't just "get a PPI". It is the reputation/experience-with-this-car/equipment of the mechanic doing the PPI, the research you do in investigating the thoroughness of a PPI he has done on someone else's car, etc.

Bought 2 Boxsters, sure glad I had the PPI done on my second one by a mechanic I knew, had used and trusted as he told me exactly what it needed and he was exactly right. Even a list of little things like serpentine belt, brakes, alignment, etc can help you negotiate a far price as the PPI should be shared with the seller in exchange for his taking the trouble to agree to the PPI and delivering the car to your choice of mechanic.

And don't assume that the dealer has the best mechanic in town. Can be, but not always.

Sounds like a very positive ending especially with the hidden final surprise that opened up a new world of genuine enjoyment, an unforgettable drive home and best of all a purchase with no hidden nasty surprises. Can't get any better than picking up your first Porsche from a true Porsche dealership.

P.s. just get the imsb done as soon as possible for worry free cruising.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a specialist on the Gold Coast from whom to get a quality pre-purchase inspection/appraisal for a 90's 911? Thanks

Don Munroe or one of the two porsche centres (Brisbane or Gold Coast).

I bought mine on Dons report and Im not disappointed!
