Mike737 Posted 16October, 2015 Report Share Posted 16October, 2015 Well it is possible that it could be a 3.6 if it had an engine transplant as it wasn't until later in the year that the gen 2's were being produced. But it would definitely not be the original engine then.If we are talking about your standard Carrera model (not GT3, GT2 or Turbo)Gen 1 cars have 3.4 onlyGen 2 cars have 3.6 onlyYou can tell the difference immediately via the headlightsNote the Gen 1 has the headlights which run all the way through the front bumperGen 2 raises back up for the fog light section
Mike737 Posted 16October, 2015 Report Share Posted 16October, 2015 You can decode the stamp on the side of the engine block to determine if it's a 3.6 or 3.4 with the following google books link page from Porsche 996 The Essential Companion: Supreme Porsche

Rod C Posted 16October, 2015 Report Share Posted 16October, 2015 Also for the upgrade you get a glovebox in the gen 2! Thats helps justify the approx 2ook outlay!
