Choppergrino Posted 25August, 2012 Report Share Posted 25August, 2012 Hi all, I am posting this to help out fellow 996 drivers, as there was no help when I was trying to resolve my small coolant issue. I went to put my 996 in the garage the other night and noticed a band of water on the ground underneath my car, this come as a surprise to me, as I am meticulous about my car and constantly check over it from top to bottom. After ensuring the car still had coolant in it I drove it into the garage and jacked it up to see if I could locate the coolant leak. It took me 30 minutes to find the leak believe it or not, and I was happy to find that it was from a hose at the front of the engine on the right. (Porsche water cooling parts 1 hose 23) Part Number 996.106.831.01 The next decision was what do I do? Do I remove it and drop coolant on the floor and be with out a car until I repair it, or do I tow the car to a P Car mech ?????? I decided to remove the air box to get a closer look and realised it would be an easy job. My Porsche is a Gen2 996 so I can't speak for the Gen 1 engines, Hose 23 on my engine had a hose clamp on the engine side and a quick release clip on the other end. I removed both fittings and proceeded to drop coolant into a tub underneath the car. The hose looked fine once I removed it but it had to be leaking somewhere. On a closer inspection of the quick release flange on the hose I noticed a hairline crack, and that was it I need to replace the hose! The next day I spent the whole morning chasing the part number on the hose, for a replacement. The majors where telling me it was a super-seeded part and now used a 997 part number. The part would take 1 week to come from the motherland. ( I can't wait a week!!!@#$%) I happened to ring an independent P-car specialist and thankfully had the new part the next day : ) . The Old part The new part The new part required removing the flange off the oil pump and replacing it with a new quick release type. This is because the new hose has a quick release fitting at both ends. ( The new part is the same as what is used on a 997) Once I replaced the hose and associated parts I replaced the missing coolant and bleed the lines as per the Porsche recommendations. Choppergrino Posted 26August, 2012 Author Report Share Posted 26August, 2012 Yes Chris it is handy info, In short I put this on the forum because when I had the problem with my leak, there was no info out there that mentioned that the original part ( hose )was no longer available. Everybody I rang kept saying the part was discontinued, and thats hard to comprehend when you need to get your car fixed ASAP. But now, I must say I have some confidence in part upgrades. (as my part is a 997 part now). Thanks Danny996

KieranD Posted 7May, 2017 Report Share Posted 7May, 2017 Thanks for the write up.I sprung a leak at the top of Lake Mountain on the last Vic SMT. Thankfully, the leak was relatively minor and i was able to drive the car home. Turns out that my 996.106.831.01 hose also failed at the quick release fitting.
