Wheel alignment not quite right??

I've had the 993 for six months now and it has been a terrific journey. Done a few SMTs, made some new friends and added to the upgrade list a little more than I really expected to. I can comfortably say that the car is now at a stage where I am really satisfied with the look, feel, and performance in all areas bar one.

Since day one the bloody steering has given me the most greif.

Bought the car knowing that the rack was binding and needed to be reconditioned.

Reconditioned the rack and got myself some new tyres and basic alignment.

Felt OK but now needed to sort the suspension.

PSS10s all round and off to a respected alignment joint for a full alignment and corner balance.

All seemed OK but the alignment guy did mention he had a little trouble with the centering of the steering wheel when he adjusted the tierods.

Car felt really good but the bumpsteer was a killer.

Over the last couple of months steering becoming progressively more difficult to control at speed and seemed skittish on the road.

Best way to solve this was to get new 18 inch rims and tyres of course. steering turned to absolute sh*t and I really struggled to accept this was a Porsche. Didn't help after I hit a section of road at speed that was missing the bloody asphalt!!!!!!!!

No more screwing around. Off to the Porsche specialist I go.

Specialist calls me and advises that the inner tierod ends have become faulty and the toe was always changing. Makes sense to me! They even say it's OK if I want to do the work and bring it back for alignment when I've changed them!!!!!!! Incredible!!!!! No problem guys you do it.

Pick up the car and the steering is wonderful. Good feel, precise turn in and very controllable.

Hit about 70 though and the vibration starts in the footwell and steering wheel!!!!!!!!!

I've seriously had just about enough. Anyone want to buy a 993 with a cursed steering geometry??????

Seriously though, I'll ring them tomorrow and I have no doubt that they will be very accommodating.

Would like some feedback from anyone who would like to add anything. could something obvious have been missed?

seems to me if the steering rack has been fixed, tie rods, alignments done, toe corrected, new suspensionm, wheels and tyres etc, that something in the car is out of whack in terms of geometry, perhaps the chassis is out a touch.. who knows

i hope its not for your sake, but it does kind of make sense if everything else has been covered

Yes, take it to Loui at Motion Automotive.

Get it fixed right. ph 96450022

Vas. Both alignment joints I've been to have been via referal. One guy was alignment and suspension speciallist and yesterday's was a very well know Porsche independent who does a lot of race set up as well.

have you checked the car to see if it has been in an accident?

Good point, JJ.

You would think they would pick it up at the PPI stage or in service.

But you never know.

Car does not seem to have any structural issues. Nothing picked up in PPI.

All welds, seams etc factory original.

JJ. The car now drives bloody great alignment wise. It's now this resonance/vibration tht is pissing me off.

Just got off the phone with the shop and I know they took it for a test drive, because they charged me $30 for "road test", but only took it to about 60!!!!!!!!!

They say nothing looked unusual under there and suggested the only thing to do was check the balance.

Thought about that this morning and Chris993 suggested that also, so I'm off to the lads at Stuckeys this afternoon! They put the tyres on and come highly regarded.

Could have even thrown a weight?

What frustrates me is that you do an alignment and charge the client for a road test and take it up to 60!!!!!

It's a F****ING Porsche for Christ's sake not a bloody 120Y. Drive the damn thing like you should!!!!!!!!!

bummer, i'd say if it was through the wheel then definately wheel balancing issue.

Thanks mate, I feel much better now.

The fact that I have Bilsteins, RS engine mounts, 18's, and a more direct shift rod doesn't help!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK guys. went down to Stuckey , spoke to Jeff and straight onto the hoist.

Now before we go any further I need to say that the guys at Stuckey have been incredibly helpful every time I've dealt with them.

Problem solved, or at least it will be next week!!!!!!!!

Any takers on what is wrong?

OK. A couple of weeks ago myself and another well respected, high posting, Boxster driving, opinionated, entertaining and highly passionate member who's name starts with "N" , but is not Niko, went for a drive to Anakie via a road that had a massive bit of asphalt missing. Unfortunately very low, tightly sprung 993s do not really appreciate that type of surface at speed .

Final result......a couple of bent rims they need to be re rolled!!!!!
