Digital Mouth Posted 8April, 2013 Report Share Posted 8April, 2013 The 2nd gear on my 1998 Porsche Boxster 986 has lost a tooth and I am just wondering what the name of the part is I'm going to have to replace? Thanks
Russ Posted 8April, 2013 Report Share Posted 8April, 2013 if your gear has lost only a single tooth you wouldn't notice, the rest of them would make up for it. There has to be something more to it like a broken hub or a failed/burnt out syncro. Either that or your clutch isn't adjusted correctly, or your gearbox fluid needs changing, or any other number of things. As I mentioned in the other thread I'd get a second opinion if your gear is missing a tooth, you need a new 2nd gear. they're about $600 as a part, then i'd imagine a few thousand in labour to disassemble the box and fix anything else they come across - but i'd bet against this being the case. Digital Mouth Posted 8April, 2013 Author Report Share Posted 8April, 2013 I went and got a 2nd opinion today and the guy said I need a new 1st/2nd Gear - Drive Shaft. And that's just his guess as well.
qstoria Posted 8April, 2013 Report Share Posted 8April, 2013 This could be worth a look: Not sure on the compatibility between the 2.5 and 2.7 Gearboxes but the price has been dropped the price to 1K so might be worth investigating. Either way I hope you get a good outcome and are up and running soon
Digital Mouth Posted 8April, 2013 Author Report Share Posted 8April, 2013 That's a good question will a 2.7 box fit a 2.5? Maybe one of the other members on this forum would know the answer.
Vas Posted 8April, 2013 Report Share Posted 8April, 2013 Sorry to hear this, Dig. Stick with what you have and rebuild it. You just wont know where you stand till you open it up. Be ready for a complete gear box rebuild. Sorry to say this, but its the way it works out most of the time. You just dont put in some new stuff in with older worn parts. T-Man Posted 8April, 2013 Report Share Posted 8April, 2013 I agree with Vas DM. You could be buying someone else's problems with a second hand box. Get her opened up and correctly sorted. This is the part of Porsche ownership that bites you, hopefully not too often though. You will soon forget the pain when you're top down cruising again. Digital Mouth Posted 10April, 2013 Author Report Share Posted 10April, 2013 I read somewhere that a Audi a4 or VW Passat 5 speed transmission with work on a Boxster. Can anyone confirm this?
ArthurK Posted 10April, 2013 Report Share Posted 10April, 2013 And you would do this because? Unless the boxes were exactly the same why spend pointless money on an experiment?
J.J. Posted 10April, 2013 Report Share Posted 10April, 2013 plus gear ratio's would be different, not worth the $$ saving, if there is any saving
Guest Harold Posted 16July, 2013 Report Share Posted 16July, 2013 My advice to your good self is must take it to a specialist and say "do it up". If you try to do a few things but not others it will come back to bite you in the not so distant future.
