edgy Posted 31July, 2023 Report Posted 31July, 2023 Hello, Has anyone had Apple CarPlay added to their PCM 3.1 locally? My Rennlist searching leads me to a few options Isudar Mr 12 Volt - (best audio quality supposedly) NM Automotive I've decided this is the one mod-con I refuse to live without in a daily driver, so if anyone has had one of these or something equivalent locally, would be good to hear your feedback. P-Kay Posted 1August, 2023 Report Posted 1August, 2023 Pretty sure Jeff @MFX did something to his Macan on this front? Perhaps he can chime in on option chosen and current operation/satisfaction? edgy 1 Quote
sleazius Posted 1August, 2023 Report Posted 1August, 2023 Blows me away that car brands still to this day don't integrate both Apple Carplay and Android Auto. The latter of which is even more egregious due to the fact that 70% of phones (globally) are android based, and many manufacturers will have Carplay and not Android Auto. tomo 1 Quote

I hear you... it is free money for a lot of these manufacturers (ie Porsche), I am not sure what it costs to "option" it on a new build, but you just know they're having a laugh when you get it (wireless too) on a Kia Picanto as standard equipment! In this case, I am looking to add it to vehicle that predates it as standard equipment... it way MY17 that it became an option for the PCM 4.0 iirc Quote

sleazius Posted 1August, 2023 Report Posted 1August, 2023 The only article I could find was from 2018 and stated that Apple gave manufacturers Carplay for free as it drove people to buy more of their phones. Got to love Euro brands charging $2k+ for it. Quote

Perhaps he can chime in on option chosen and current operation/satisfaction? Yep. I put the Joyeauto unit into my Macan and the most difficult part is getting the dash off to get the unit out. After that it is not too difficult. I did a video on it, but James at Auto Amateur's video is more thorough. It is wireless and I have been using it for at least 18 months or so now. Only hiccups I have had was the reverse camera didn't work, but I just had to tweak some dip switches on the unit and it came back. The only other thing is that I listen to the cars regular radio, but I have the carplay running Waze while I drive. If I get a phone call, I can answer it on the screen, but I have to hit the cars Source button and switch from FM to AUX to get sound. If you listen to music or podcasts or whatever all through the Carplay you won't have this issue though. I am no audiophile so I can't comment on the sound quality. Sounds fine to me, but I wouldn't know the difference edgy 1 Quote
Goofen Posted 2August, 2023 Report Posted 2August, 2023 I ordered this Kit from Chris who is very active on various FB groups: Carplay / Android Auto Plug and Play Kit for Porsche PCM 3.1 - 991.1 9 – carplayretrofits I think it is based off a similar platform - Chris says that his kit has ironed out some of the bugs (unconfirmed). I am on the fence regarding the install. My 991.1 has the extended Porsche warranty and as much as I would like the Apple Carplay feature, I am not sure I want to deviate from OEM. I could be persuaded to move this on if someone wanted to through with the installation. Quote

If you disconnected the power to it you would never know it was there. You just toggle between the Carplay and the PCM with the factory Nav button. Quote
edgy Posted 11August, 2023 Author Report Posted 11August, 2023 I ended up drinking the kool aid and ordering the Mr 12 volt system... I'll check back post install Quote

Miffy Posted 7May, 2024 Report Posted 7May, 2024 Would Porsche decline renewal of the extended warranty if you they determined you had a system installed ? Of course, be nice if there was a genuine option… Quote

I had to go and pick up the RS from the shop last week, so I used it as an excuse to actually dust off this box and do car swap to have fitted this CarPlay unit. I've only had it a couple of days, but it is really good I have to say... feels like OEM to me, the only thing I haven't tried is the radio app so I can listen to FM radio & use the waze nav etc for the $$$ it is a great option versus the expense of the PCCM+ unit I bought for my 997, that was a costly exercise (worth it), but the PCM 3.1 hardware in our cars is more than adequate for this mod... the car feels 10 years younger now. DieRooiGevaar Posted 27June, 2024 Report Posted 27June, 2024 So @edgy you did it yourself? If so, difficulty of installation? Tell us more! Quote

I gave it to the guys at PR tech, they said it was very straightforward, perhaps a few hours at best… sorry I’m not much more help than that! But I bought it via Roman @ ACS on rennlist, his comms & support were great and he would guide you through an install Quote
DieRooiGevaar Posted 27June, 2024 Report Posted 27June, 2024 Hell no, if you found an installer I'd rather do the same. Mind if I ask what they charged you? Quote

If you have the same JoyeAuto unit as I do you can still listen to the radio via the regular PCM. Hit the Source button and select FM, then you can navigate to the original Porsche stations. Hit Navi and it will switch the screen back to Carplay but the audio will still be the PCM. Just a bit of a juggle when you get a phone call and have to go back to Source and switch back to Aux.
