rafikdous Posted 4March Report Share Posted 4March A mate of mine is looking for a trimmer to replace the targa panel cover. Preferably in Sydney but other places ok too. Any recommendations? Most trimmers he contacted are either too busy or don't want to do the job. It's a 1979 SC
epilot Posted 4March Report Share Posted 4March It's a bit of hassle shipping to and fro but he's the best https://www.carsincnj.com/targa-tops.html
cafe_racer Posted 4March Report Share Posted 4March I went through the expense on this. The top still wasn’t great. I really think the value is having this guy do it on your car.

cafe_racer Posted 6March Report Share Posted 6March Sorry I used that Dan guy in the US. Sent it over. I reckon to get it done well he needs to have your car there too. Not just the top.
Peter John Posted 6March Report Share Posted 6March Did he try east coast trim shop in Sydney? Just like any trade a hefty wait period is expected when someone has a strong reputation. It’s a smaller job and if you’re bread and butter is big jobs with long term clients it will be hard to get a look in- patience will be needed. For the expense, I did not think it was worth it and did not think it was any different. (I sold my targa in the end.) cafe_racer
Mike-S Posted 1April Report Share Posted 1April I’ve heard Prostitch in Sydney are good, have seen a couple done by them. I had mine done by Dan in the US, took the roof to him on a trip there, also got his front edge seals. Contrary to the others mine has been fine, however it was 5-6 years ago. Dan must’ve been well into his 70’s then so maybe things have got worse with time. He does sell a complete kit that any decent trimmer could use. marco22 Posted 24June Report Share Posted 24June Used Dan in USA, huge shipping expense , and was not worth it . Trim was substandard and a lot peeled off very fast ... the top doesnt fit the car and despite all new seals through out and a full rebuild , water pours in , and all the screws used to fix the side seals are bured and will need to be drilled out if i want to rebuild again . Davis Posted 27June Report Share Posted 27June Hey I'm doing my Targa Top right now. So far I have stripped right back and removed all previous glue. That's the easy bit. I purchased the new top, padding and frame webbing from Heritage parts (UK) and upon receipt noticed everything I received has come from Germany. The Top looks to be exact grain of the original same thickness too. I need to track down some double cap rivets and make sure I have the correct glue for the top edge of the Vinyl. Targa Dan suggested 3M weather Strip Glue however its not available here in Australia. I have taken a heap of photo's and will share progress shortly. Buchanan Automotive Posted 27June Report Share Posted 27June Ive done a few of these with the genuine cover from Porsche, They are incredibly time consuming, I would also say the new tops are almost 25mm too short front to back, my guess made this way on purpose but you have to stretch these on to fit properly and this can take quite a few goes, I find doing over and over while letting it sit in the sun the next day works pretty well. Davis Posted 28June Report Share Posted 28June Hey, what glue do you use for the Targa Top bottom edges to the frame?
reedminor Posted 11July Report Share Posted 11July I'm told that Porsche Classic are now doing brand new Targa tops for salew through thier classic centres. I read about them in the Porsche Originale books I get mailed from Porsche Classic. I am not aware of the costis involved in restoring a Targa roof - having only owned Coupes - but the new Targa tops complete were into the 5 figures... according to a friend of mine restoring a 1973 2.4E Targa. Just like restoring old Fuchs wheels - you somethimes need to look past the new cost which initially seems very high - and actually calculate what it will cost ( freight, restoration, foreign exchange, customs duty and GST) you to refurbish your existing one. In that context the new ones seem like reasonable value. Thanks Justin
Mike-S Posted 11July Report Share Posted 11July If a new one is 5 figures, it’s much more realistic to restore the original. Certainly less than half the price.
