Orion03 Posted 14October, 2013 Report Share Posted 14October, 2013 Okay, apologies for the stupid question but... I'll be picking up a car on Saturday and looking forward to driving home using the Navigation system... if it has one .. lol now, car was built in 2005, so the maps are from then. A lot has happen to the roads since then so... is there a way to update the PCM GPS maps? Has this topic come up on PFA before?
Orion03 Posted 14October, 2013 Author Report Share Posted 14October, 2013 Okay after a search on google and a read through Rennlist and piston heads.... seems like you can buy PCM update DVD's with updated maps but they cost hundreds of $ and... may have to be installed by the dealer? something about one time use codes etc? Looks like i'll use my phone gps + mount in the short term to back up the car GPS.
nath Posted 14October, 2013 Report Share Posted 14October, 2013 Check first the maps may have been updated since 2005.

nath Posted 14October, 2013 Report Share Posted 14October, 2013 I can relate. Still have no idea of the version of my maps but haven't had any issues yet...
Orion03 Posted 14October, 2013 Author Report Share Posted 14October, 2013 I didn't know that the Hume now bypasses Holsbrook and the submarine in the ground.. shows you how long it's been since I last drove to Sydney.
nath Posted 14October, 2013 Report Share Posted 14October, 2013 From memory it bypasses nearly all towns now even Albury has a bypass.
Orion03 Posted 14October, 2013 Author Report Share Posted 14October, 2013 Wow ! It has been ages then ! hmmm how many years has it been.... I wonder, best not to count....
Ben C3.o Posted 14October, 2013 Report Share Posted 14October, 2013 I have created a backup disk of the old man's 2007 Jag navigation DVD and put it in a 2001 Jag and it worked without issue. Also worked in a 2003 Lexus. Maybe take your laptop to your first SMT just in case someone has an updated disk.
Ben C3.o Posted 14October, 2013 Report Share Posted 14October, 2013 Drove down to Hotham a few weeks ago and yes they are all bypassed.
nath Posted 14October, 2013 Report Share Posted 14October, 2013 Bypasses are good for the drive but bad for the towns. Good thing for me when I drive down Friday it won't be as long as it was last time I drove it.
Orion03 Posted 14October, 2013 Author Report Share Posted 14October, 2013 Yes that submarine at Holsbrook used to be a real highlight on the Hume, and now it's bypassed. must be terrible for the town after all that effort getting it there and set up in the ground. nath Posted 14October, 2013 Report Share Posted 14October, 2013 Funny story, urban myth from my navy days, engineers had to do a quick trip to Holbrook to get spared for one of the old O-boats after she had been concreted in. Middle of the night job....
Russ Posted 14October, 2013 Report Share Posted 14October, 2013 isn't it just the fibreglass outside casing? and there's nothing much else to it?
withers Posted 14October, 2013 Report Share Posted 14October, 2013 You bypass everything! Only places I stopped were the roadhouse Servos. I used the car nav and my iPhone as backup. As for maps - I've still got the 2005 in mine. So if you find a way to upgrade them I would love to know.
Harvs11 Posted 14October, 2013 Report Share Posted 14October, 2013 Bypasses are good for the drive .... I disagree Nath. You need the towns to refresh and break the monotony. Hour after hour at 110kph is a killer. Last time I drove the Hume was returning from the ACT SMT in Feb. Holbrook was still on the hwy, next stop was Macca's at Glenrowan just to get off the road and recharge the brain.

edgy Posted 14October, 2013 Report Share Posted 14October, 2013 I didn't think Holbrook was bypassed yet? At least it wasn't when I last done the drive in August! Didn't look anywhere near done....

edgy Posted 14October, 2013 Report Share Posted 14October, 2013 That is disappointing! If there was one town on the Syd-Melb route that was a good stop & half way point Holbrook was it.. I will still stop there!
