Hey guys,

if you were to go look at an older (like a late '70s) 911 for someone else...

What are the top 5 things you would look for /at ?

and for that matter I guess what questions would you ask… ?

  1. Accident Damage
  2. Rust around the windows front and rear, Bottoms of the front Guards, inside the luggage space under the battery, the inner front wheel wells where the impact bumper tubes mount to the body, under the front luggage compartment rubber seal( they're galvanized but they rust)
  3. Service history, ask the owner what type of oil is in it, if he doesn't know, drop the offer by 3k :D  I'm serious
  4. Oil leaks, they leak oil, but you are looking for major soaking of the engine, minor wetness is ok.
  5. Gearbox, how does it drive? does it shift OK with no graunches.

The rest is easy to replace and rejuvinate at an economic cost.

If the car looks, smells and drives like its been cared for(if its still got its jack, Tools and spare tire is a good indicator) then its a good un, well worth going for a PPI to get a full health check.

1. Where is the car from & has it been converted? (If it has been converted check the quality of the conversion)

2. Check the numbers (including engine) so you know what your dealing with. (has it been in an accident or stolen?)

3. Body, later cars were galvanised but still have areas that rust, in particular bottom of front windscreen, battery compartment and drainage plugs at the rear (if a sunroof coupe)

4. Engine, has it had any work done? upgrades (chain tensioners etc.)

5. Oil leaks - if so where is it coming from? (hard to identify without getting it onto a hoist and giving a proper clean)

A very basic 101 on what would be my initial 5 points - each can be expanded, will become clearer the more cars you look at. Based on the above you may or may not want to take it for a drive.

and a biggie is a leaking rear main # 8 Bearing, you can look down below the rear crank pulley and see if theres oil there from the rear bearing or nose bearing as its also refered to.

To repair this properly is engine out and case split; 8-15k.

Even if the ppi shows intact head studs, it's worth checking the history to see if the Dilivar exhaust studs have been replaced at some stage. Preferably with steel studs as used on the inlet side or even better with high strength studs like ARP, Racewear etc. This applies equally to all aluminium case 3.0 SC's and 3.2 Carreras.  Eventually the Dilivar studs will snap.
