Guest Harold Posted 4March, 2014 Report Share Posted 4March, 2014 Amanda, you can buy any model car on any day of the week. Cars are stupid, you can't eat them if you are hungry or wear them if you are cold. If I was to think of the money I have wasted on cars over the years I would check myself into an institution for the mentally unstable. Pay off your house and any other debt you have then buy a toy. That's what most people do. Buying an expensive car is just about the dumbest thing any of us do, it's just like tearing up money on the side of the road. Mind you the costs of a new P car pales into insignificance compared to a big boat. Now that is dumber than dumb! Ask me how I know! Whatever you do will be the right decision for you. Good luck. Then I should check myself into an institution too - cos I is craaaaaaazieeee! I've had many many many cars and spent a fortune. Too true Harold, too true - all you say is true. BUT I wouldn't change a thing, although in hindsight I'd not bought that bloody SLK! I've had a lot of fun and will continue to do so. I've made numerous friends on PFA and that won't change cos I don't have a P car.
Tit Posted 4March, 2014 Report Share Posted 4March, 2014 NO VOLKSWAGENS!! They are a disaster waiting to happen... Or has been my recent experience. Something like this would make a respectable shopping trolley and leave plenty in the bank for a Targa when the time is right http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/Volkswagen-Polo-2010/SSE-AD-2663480/?Cr=31&sdmvc=
Orion03 Posted 4March, 2014 Report Share Posted 4March, 2014 The MX5 club in Victoria is very active and do lots of fun events. If you get the MX5 you should join them. Track days, Social days, Skid pan events. Good bunch of guys. My next car... after the 997 ... will probably be electric.
withers Posted 4March, 2014 Author Report Share Posted 4March, 2014 NO VOLKSWAGENS!! They are a disaster waiting to happen... Or has been my recent experience. I've had 2 GTIs to date and both were superb cars and never missed a beat! However, as a shopping trolley I'd avoid them and look for a Toyota/Mazda etc Anyhoo... either MX-5 or MINI is the go. I'm gonna start driving both of them. Who knows, maybe I can be satisfied enough to just keep it!

withers Posted 25March, 2014 Author Report Share Posted 25March, 2014 This is in budget, looks nice (part from that steering wheel) might be collectible, could hold it's value and its a Porsche http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/Porsche-944-1990/SSE-AD-2563760/?Cr=9&sdmvc=
J.J. Posted 25March, 2014 Report Share Posted 25March, 2014 I've had 2 NBs before. NB8A and a NB8B. I prefer the idea of an NC due to the larger size and exterior styling. I've read all the differences relating to handling but think I'd still prefer the newer car. I'll deffo check out both. Maybe drive an SE Hadn't considered Honda, like the MINI I just remember them being expensive to maintain. I've also not been a huge fan of the designs of Honda in the last 10 or so years.... I'll have a look tho, I'm open to ideas. 200SX is a good looking car. I wonder how many are around unmolested tho. EDIT - I'm also trying not to own a car I've already owned! i just bought a 2001 model Spec R, one owner completely stock with 65,000km's for my new daily. Awesome car, 16k i paid on road. Norm Posted 25March, 2014 Report Share Posted 25March, 2014 Hi Amanda, a shopping trolley is, I feel, the most sensible idea. And when you get your P you will appreciate more on the occasions you do drive it. That was my plan when I bought mine. But I kind of didn't stick to my own advice...! I bought a E39 535 to do the 300km commute back to Perth when we go. It's a very comfortable car with a sure footed chassis. I love it and the value for money is second to none. You couldn't buy a V8 Commodore for the same money or condition.. It's a strange market, people just aren't interested in second hand 5 series.. Servicing I'm not stressed about because I have a good aftermarket BM specialist but I'm not looking forward to something breaking. I'm gambling on bmw reliability.. Maybe that's why people steer clear of them. Time will tell. I think value for money for fun, the MX5 is a good choice. I like the design of the new Minis. What negatives have you heard?? Russ Posted 25March, 2014 Report Share Posted 25March, 2014 having a daily driver shopping cart, and a 911 in the garage is a good combo makes the 911 feel even more special when you unplug the battery maintenance, and drive out
withers Posted 25March, 2014 Author Report Share Posted 25March, 2014 At the moment the car that is under my radar is a MINI Cooper S 2004 - 2006 LCI (ie the updated version) Tit has given me a big leg up by providing me with some info on these cars. I drove one on Sat that had all the basic mods done to it and it was a quick, fun and responsive little car. I LOVED IT! I did not want to give it back The exhaust was making a little pop and crackles sounds - FUN! There's a friendly bunch of local enthusiasts that hang out, so like you guys - I can join up with a new group of people to play with. So I think I've found my next car. This will be my ride for the next 4 or 5 years. I know myself well enough to say that a shopping trolley won't cut it for me.. I'd hate not having a car I look forward to enjoying. Yes they are one of those cars that do cost a bit to maintain.. but like the P car, I'll do my research.. get PPI done and ensure I buy someones well loved machine. You aren't talking IMS or failing oil pumps or things like that. On a well maintained car, I should do fine... Here's an example of my fave config of one
