SimonR Posted 10August, 2014 Author Report Share Posted 10August, 2014 So, finally got a chance to go over the car to have a look and give it a clean. Lots of white dog hair all over the black interior which really took some getting out. Amazingly enough, on closer inspection, the car seems to be in better condition than I first thought. The interior was just really quite dirty. Here are the worst of the issues. Minor tear in the driver's side seat, and some wear on the piping: Puffy sun visors: Oh no … one of the tweeters has fallen out in the back ... The tool kit is rusty and there's no jack (or spare for that matter) … The rubber around the elephant ears is all corroded (this ones seems to be a little bit of a hassle in that it's not a replaceable piece of rubber, but the whole mirror motor mechanism that needs to be replaced at around US$400 each): I'd already been told by the PO that the heater didn't work. He wasn't sure whether it was his inability to operate the magically levers or whether it was in fact broken. A quick bit of research at one of my rest breaks on the way back told me that the fix is usually something as simple as a replacement cable, or even just hooking a cable back up. So I just gritted my teeth and froze my butt of on the way home. When I popped open the deck lid, this is what I found … One minute and a flat headed screwdriver later and I have a working heater. LOL … How on earth I didn't notice this on my inspection I just don't know. Pressure/excitement of the moment I guess, but boy it would have been nice to have heat on the way back! If you're thinking what I was thinking at this point, that it's all too good to be true, you're pretty much right. Here's the front with the carpets out for cleaning: And them back in again … And back seats, this one's before cleaning and I forgot to take one after, but minus the dog hair and general detritus, they look extraordinarily good for a 38 year old car: So, there's not a single thing here that warrants even mild concern. In fact, I kept going upstairs to my wife to tell her what isn't wrong with the car instead of what is. And this is the issue that I found: I could see the oil when I was inspecting the car, but it appeared to be not from the engine, but from the gearbox, or maybe from between the two. It's oily and grubby, but only puts out one small drip a day onto the garage floor. The car goes in tomorrow (Monday) for a 20,000km service because it's history is unknown and a full once-over to make a plan of attack to sort out whatever they find. It'll be interesting to see how big a deal or expensive an issue this is. Michel managed to find out that when the work was done on the car, the gearbox wasn't touched. So given the price paid, the condition of the rest of the car, how well it drives, the fact that I've since found out that it's Australian spec (but not necessarily Australian delivered -- maybe tourist delivery?) and that this is all I can find from an amateur's point-of-view, even if this is a $5K fix, I think I've done OK. I guess I'm going to find out soon enough!

Unfortunately I've taken bits off each as I have too many Porsches ; luckily they have the same mirrors Don't spend $400 on a mirror...
SimonR Posted 11August, 2014 Author Report Share Posted 11August, 2014 Out of interest how many peeps dismissed the car Simon bought .. Poor add , 'weird owner..? Well, I have to be the first to put my hand up … there was just too much that was questionable about the whole deal. It wasn't until the price drop, and my wife saying: just get on a plan and look at it so you can stop bothering me about it, that I got over the line. I've got the advantage that most things seem to work, so I can just make a list of what I'd like to replace, and then wait to find the bits and pieces as they become available. There's going to be a lot of online searching and asking around in my future, which is all good with me. I guess one of the things that hard to know as a novice is what parts are and aren't available around the traps vs just ordering in replacements or reproductions from overseas. Get it mechanically A1 as a priority ; keep an eye on ebay etc for parts prices ; over time you'll know what things are worth. of course there is always postage ! Locally is always the best source , once you get in the loop of owners it gets easier. Oh , and refurb where possible! I'm a great believer in that principle. Russ Posted 11August, 2014 Report Share Posted 11August, 2014 Have you had a bad experience with PCB?i haven't personally, but i've heard from people who have with older cars that they're more focused on the newer ones I'd suggest TD Automotive at albion personally, but there's probably opinions about them too whats their hourly rate? i'd bet it's not $
SimonR Posted 11August, 2014 Author Report Share Posted 11August, 2014 Perhaps … DAF911 who I work with and is now on Porsche number 5 or 7 … I can't quite remember. Anyway, Dave was pretty unimpressed with some of the service and work that he'd had done around town at the regular haunts. He's been sending his cars to PCB for the last two or three years and has been impressed with both the work and the prices. As an indication, the hourly rate at PCB is less than that at the other specialists. Not to say that the other guys can't get the job done quicker, but everything is always what it seems. At least for me, Dave's experience, and his personal recommendation to the service manager meant that I was happy to send the car there for it's first visit. I'll see how it pans out and take it from there. Interestingly enough, while they won't supply non-genuine parts, they're more than happy to install anything that you give them. He stopped using TD when Ted and Don split as he felt that it all went downhill pretty quickly after that point. No doubt TD are completely different as a business now than they were then, and at some point I'll give them a go. People are always going to have good and bad experiences with the same suppliers. It's the nature of the beast. I have clients that love me and clients that don't (I just can't possibly understand why, I'm so darn charming!). I'm not quite ready to write anyone off until I have a good reason to do so, but I had to start somewhere, and PCB it is!

SimonR Posted 11August, 2014 Author Report Share Posted 11August, 2014 thats actually pretty good. i guess i'm just afraid of their parts pricing and their lack of sporto knowledge I hear you on the parts, Dave orders almost everything in through Sierra Madre or PP and has PCB do the work, and I'll certainly be following that lead. Once I'm up and running I'll be trying to do what I can myself with the help of you friendly Brisbane forum folks who I plan on bothering a lot! I'd heard that lack of sporto knowledge was becoming an issue across the board, as long as you've got someone who's on top of it you're all good and I don't think I'd be messing with that. Any tips for where to start? I'm guessing stuck mechanism from never being adjusted. It's in the right position for me so no big deal right now, but its the sort of thing I like to get fixed.
