I went to tyrepower today and try to repair broken tyre,  they told me the tyre cannot repair because it worn out a lot.

I asked how much for 4

They told me my car have to use Porsche tyres which is N spec. Is that sure? I never heard N spec,

they recommend Continental SC3 N SPEC

$440 each on front

$280 each on back

Can anyone give me advise

The Michelin Super Sport is pretty good and have a high wear rating i.e. They last a lot longer.  The Contis are also good in both wet and dry and last pretty good too.

The Pirellis P-Zero Assymetrics are also very sticky in the dry, not as good as the Conti's in the wet and are a very soft compound so will wear out faster (but my wife and I love them)

Call around for prices as they vary quite dramatically store to store. I usually call the tyre store located in the blue collar suburbs for a price (which are usually cheaper) and then get my usual tyre shop to match it.

Out of interest Eddy, was it a rear tyre that is worn?   And is it worn on the inside?

I find the fronts out last virtually two sets of rears on the Boxster I had and looks like the Cayman is going to be the same.

If the fronts are ok, see if you can get the same brand/pattern as is already on the car, you may get away with replacing rears only.

Also sounds like you may need a front and rear alignment when you get the new ones.

Just a thought...

Hi Niko,

4 tyres need to be replaced because all tyres are unroadworthy, this is what they say.

My current tyres are Bridgestone Potenza and they told me this is not the Porsche tyres.

Mate I have potenza's on mine and they were put on by PCM.

Check this out, I put it on the forum a couple of weeks back, check if the Potenzas you have on are the same as the tyres listed in the N spec section.

http://flatsixes.com/porsche-products/tires-and-wheels/understanding-porsche-n-spec-approval-when-choosing-tires/

My back ones will be getting replaced not too far down the track.   I have already spoken to TRACTION TYRES in Rowville.

They will be supplying me a pair of rear POTENZA's.   They are very good to deal with if you wanted to go POTENZA's again or

YOKOHAMA. They do both brands but are more Yokohama orientated.

Bridgestones tend to have low wear ratings. The Potenza RE050As listed have a 140 thread wear rating. Even the the softer high performance Pirelli P-zeros have a wear rating of 220.

The Michelins SuperSports are 300 and Conti ContiSportContact 3s are 280.

And from my experience, Contis keep their performance in the wet right down to the wear indicators.

So you may pay more for the Michelins and Contis but they last a whole lot longer and maintain their performance even when they are nearing their wear indicators. Something the Japanese made Bridgestones are unable to do. The Pirellis P-zeros get noisy near their wear indicators - a convenient indication to change them out.

Or hold out for the N-Spec version of the brand new Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S. They will be the next tyres for our 987 Spyder. Pirelli Pzero's took a nice beating at the track today :D

I got a reply from Michelin Australia on the 26th of June saying this about the timeline for the PS4S, this was similar to what my local Tyre shop said too (October).

Thanks for your enquiry. We are expecting to launch MICHELIN new Pilot Sport 4S range in the coming July. However, if you are after N spec tyres, 235/35R20 92Y N0 and 265/35R20 99Y N0 Pilot Sport 4S, please note tyres will probably arrive in late September or October. We are sorry for any inconvenience it may cause due to the delay.

Due to this I just replaced my rears with the N spec Pirelli P Zero PZ4's (the older design P Zero's on the front still have 10,000km's in them) with a plan to replace all 4 tyres with P4S' when the time comes the fronts need replacing - Price was $1,200 for 2x 265/35/20's fitted.

Based on the OP's comments I assume he is probably in a situation like me where he can't wait.

Thanks for that, timing should work perfectly for me. Front's are still pretty good but I'll swap them all to Michelin. Looks like we'll need to shop around though, $600 each is up there...

Yes, I can't wait. The rear tyre just temporarily fixed (use repair kit)

[whistle] $1200 for a pair is pretty expensive and more than twice the price of the Super Sports at $250ea. Are they worth $600ea?

Probably not but 265 wide 20" Tyres with N Spec approval (Porsche Approved) are just expensive. I'm happy to pay a premium for having awesome looking 20" wheels :)

Super Sports in this size aren't much cheaper (~$500 for non N Spec tyres) and while I personally think the N Spec thing is a bit of a crock so is a lot of things with these cars..

ah that explains it. I was quoting 18" tyres.

That is a bit high. I think you can do better. Wheel alignment usually costs between $90-120 unless it is done by a high end suspension specialist. I just got my Boxster Spyder aligned by Heasman Steering and Suspension for $176 today (took 2 hours - done manually). My usual tyre shop does it for $90 for me (on the laser alignment machine 20 mins work)

The Porsche dealers charge $299 for an alignment which I think is a rip off.

I paid $250 each for 235/40ZR18s for N rated Michelin Pilot Super Sports. And $330 each for the 265/40ZR18 rears. The Conti's should not be so far off those prices. I would try calling a few other shops and not mention what the tyres are for so that you don't get slugged the Porsche tax (i.e. don't mention that your car is a Porsche).

Another quote

Michelin pilot sport 2 $

I wouldn't worry about country of origin but age of the tyres. The Pirelli P-Zero Assymetrics used to come from Germany and cost $420 ea 6 years ago. Now from Thailand they are $230 ea. Still  the same quality and performance.

  • 3 weeks later...

I have Bridgestone S001 on my Boxster. Not N spec. Pretty sure N spec was only for 911's due to the weight of the motor.

Never had any issues with these tyres. Grippy and wearing very  well.
