k1200 Posted 23November, 2012 Report Share Posted 23November, 2012 I am looking for some good value track day tyres. Don't have to be cheap, just good value. I have raced on Yokohama ao48's in my Improved Production Subaru, and haven't tried anything else for a few years. My short list comprises Dunlop dz03 and toyo r888, and I can get Michelin from tirerack in the US. Pirelli is unavailable at the moment. Any recommendations? hugh Posted 23November, 2012 Report Share Posted 23November, 2012 The R888 are great value. I have been using both these and the dunlops and can't complain.
k1200 Posted 24November, 2012 Author Report Share Posted 24November, 2012 How do your lap times compare between the Dunlop and r888's? Do you run the same car setup with both tyres?
hugh Posted 24November, 2012 Report Share Posted 24November, 2012 Yes same car and setup. I had been running the dunlops front and rear then replaced the rears with the 888's as I am still learning on the track and not so focused on lap times for the moment. My lap times however have been getting better by I put this down to practice rather than tyres, no real noticeable difference to me for the level I am at. My new rears were $300 each as opposed to dunlops at $430 (approx.), can't complain at this stage.
k1200 Posted 24November, 2012 Author Report Share Posted 24November, 2012 thanks hugh - much appreciated. bummer about tirerack.com not exporting the toyo's any more - they were only about $1000 for a full set (plus freight) - i was quoted $2500 for the dunlops in australia. cheers
hugh Posted 24November, 2012 Report Share Posted 24November, 2012 I have also neglected to realise that your driving a GT3 from memory? There are probably a lot more options for your wheel size, Pirelli and Michelin are not an option for me but am sure they would be a great tyre. oz951 Posted 25November, 2012 Report Share Posted 25November, 2012 I've run 888s & MPSC on the 996 this year, both were good but I'd not really have any qualms saying that the MPSCs felt like better tyres.
k1200 Posted 25November, 2012 Author Report Share Posted 25November, 2012 thanks oz951, do you have any time comparisons? Ive never raced on Michelin and dont know anyone who has. I've used Dunlop DZ02, Toyo R888's and Bridgeston Re55's about 5 or 6 years ago, but only Yokohama since then. On a slightly related topic, do you think its llikely that i can source a set of secondhand track wheels for my GT3 in Sydney or Melbourne? Cheers
Uncle Posted 3December, 2012 Report Share Posted 3December, 2012 Have you considered some ex up car slicks? I've got a good contact on them if you need one.
wasserkuhl Posted 3December, 2012 Report Share Posted 3December, 2012 On a slightly related topic, do you think its llikely that i can source a set of secondhand track wheels for my GT3 in Sydney or Melbourne? Cheers These are widely available and I am sure you could approach several specialists who maintain cup cars and extract a set of BBS wheels from them. However mostly cup cars a centrelocks. Depends what your budget is? 3.5 to 4k would buy you a set of decent secondhand rims to use on track.
k1200 Posted 3December, 2012 Author Report Share Posted 3December, 2012 Have you considered some ex up car slicks? I've got a good contact on them if you need one. i dont know that my suspension will work well with slicks - its just standard at the moment and im keen to keep it that way for a while at least. i know where i can get a set of adjustable bilstein coilovers though.... 9fan Posted 1February, 2013 Report Share Posted 1February, 2013 Can we ask what sizes or how much ? I have found 295 888s very good. Cheers,Mark.
9fan Posted 2February, 2013 Report Share Posted 2February, 2013 Haunted Hills Hillclimb today - VIC state round. Previous best 59.2 - today beat marque sports cars 3Lt record (58.28) now 57.74. Found the harder compound Proxy 888s even though 295s, not as grippy as Advan A050 softs in 255s. Cheers,Mark.
k1200 Posted 3February, 2013 Author Report Share Posted 3February, 2013 Can we ask what sizes or how much ? I have found 295 888s very good. Cheers,Mark. R888's in GG compound were $986 for 235/40R18 and 295/30R18 - check tirerack.com for prices on other sizes - freight was $408 to Darwin. Ordered them on Friday night, arrived at my office on Tuesday morning with Aust Day long weekend in between. Congrats on your hillclimb result. i havent used AO50's - i am still sulking from having to use AO48's as our control tyre in IPRA. I spent a fortune on those dang things over the years... 9fan Posted 8February, 2013 Report Share Posted 8February, 2013 The 888s will be better in the Darwin heat than 050 softs (048s are harder than 050s).
333pg333 Posted 1March, 2013 Report Share Posted 1March, 2013 Why not try the Hankook Z221? In my totally subjective observations I 'felt' that the Nitto NT01s are better than the 888's even though some say they're the same tyre with a different tread pattern.
