Flying Dutchman Posted 12March, 2021 Report Share Posted 12March, 2021 Hello all finally bought my first Porsche a tidy little 986. I am an aircraft engineer so not scared to do my own work but who is the preferred supplier of say suspension components as I attempt to achieve mechanical Nirvana. The guys at Alexandria Porsche are very helpful but admit there are many aftermarket options of very high quality. I have had dealings with Pelican who are great but postage can be a killer. Anyhow happy to contribute to discussions and sharing the love. Who do you go to for parts? Cheers John
Blue964 Posted 13March, 2021 Report Share Posted 13March, 2021 while i buy a lot of my stuff from pelican and design911, don't overlook the local p-car dealer for parts if you're looking for OEM. i've sometimes found my local dealer to be competitive for some (not all) parts. Steve996 Posted 13March, 2021 Report Share Posted 13March, 2021 I’ve had good experiences with Autohaus for parts. Not sure if they post or whether they’re the cheapest, but they do stock aftermarket and it’s always worth a trip to poke your head in and see what they’re working on. Cheers John Depends on your shopping list and what is your definition of suspensions parts ( eg full refresh or a coupe of refresh bits. Based on chasing about 300 parts for my 996 ( bolts and nuts included), my formulae in order of priority for genuine parts is 1) fcp euro in the US. Best shipping rates and bottom line to your door pricing but porsche parts are somewhat thinner compared to other euro brands 2) what's a dutchman asking this question for. Haven't you come across easy square. Shipping not the best pricing but pricing on most parts beat local dealers landed and yes genuine porsche boxed parts. 3) the occasional ring around at p dealers. But very rarely do they get anywhere close, but on the odd time I have got quotes off all 4 Melb dealers, doncaster porsche come back with the best prices delivered. Example gt3 brake sensors quotes 2 wweeks ago. 37 euro each from easy sqaure, doncaster was 77 aud and cheapest shipping. But those margin differences get bigger on more substantial parts. However was indeed surprised they came out to be the cheapest on 996 gt3 lower control arms when I was on the hunt for that item on my suspension list. All the other 20 odd genuine suspension parts were sources from the above. I tend to not chase OE parts because I have landed genuine for not much more than locally costed OE. However broke my rule before Christmas, eg despately needed to get a set of front 996 gt3 pads to get my car going two days before going for an alignment after suspension and brake upgrades and pads I had didnt fit. Quotes ranged from dealers were about 678 plus deliver to circa $900 and 2-3 weeks lead time. Looked at design 911 website , got the textar OE Code off it. Bit of luck but gave the part number to my mechanic had a set of front textars delivered to his garage within 4 hours for circa $200. Let's say in his view he reckons those pads are not soley used on a 996 gt3. That little emergency ended up being to no avail. Car had travelled 25m on brand new suspension setup ( moved around a garage) and my mechanic gets a ohlins coilover recall email a day before its about to get an alignment. ( least I didn't go though with the alignment work). Recall said don't drive your car. Fronts strut pin may shear from the top mount. Replacement kit will be provided. 2.5 months later and tracking a replacement fix kit right now that see seems have gone walkabout in Singapore Not too happy with the replacement kit solution, eg requires elephant racing mounts to be installed with the replacement front struts. Flying Dutchman Posted 23April, 2022 Author Report Share Posted 23April, 2022 Thanks guys after a lifetime of BMW motorcycle parts relationship building i start again. I have replaced all consumables , or should I say a lot of consumables as it seems 986 have a lot of components that are considered regular replacement. I have been in touch with Pelican, and heaps of local places that happen to have quality/acceptable so a number of shiny new undercarriage bits with bushes in them ,. 4 rotors 4 sets of pads complete flush and bleed, had some issues with radiator fans not coming on when they should so tested that system saw the price of replacement resistors and chose to buy others from Jaycar and they work a treat. Apparently oil air separator and water pump are also classed as consumables so i have those ready to fit.....oh yes the roof would not operate one day so practiced my soldering and adjustment of the fragile microswitch near the rear vision mirror which works fine now. Headlights mmmmmm like a candle in the wind or just as bright, so some nice H7 LED's fitted which need to be very accurately aimed as i have found myself unpopular from those approaching on a dark night. would still prefer HID but it is way better than an halogen i could find. all in all "Hilda" handles very well, brakes great the Apple car Play and fully sick sub woofer behind passengers seat and 4 speakers is very nice....when i make some adjustments to Exhaust that music will be even better as at the moment very quiet. oh yes the car was an english import so the speedo in MPH which is ok for me I am old but anyone else is in trouble oh you can show KPH in the centre of the display but its tiny and very inaccurate so a head up display i have fitted will save my points far better. The Aircon controller went wheels up but got a replacement easy enough in fake walnut ....yuck..... Surprisingly rust is almost non existent perhaps as it is galvinised underneath paint is very good and I managed to clean up any small dibgs to invisible status.....those dent pullers do work if you use very strong heated glue gun glue sticks. Next job open the engine bay up fully to clean and inspect.
42 South Posted 23April, 2022 Report Share Posted 23April, 2022 Have had excellent service by post from Autohaus as well. When we bought our 987, I listed out a three or four years supply of consumables as well as full set of discs and pads and the pricing was extremely good - they even gave a 20% discount on quantity and packed in a Fredo Frog! We did the same when we purchased the Macan last year. We don't service the cars ourselves, but do use a specialist indie (Porsche trained) who is more than happy to use the parts I supply to them. A couple of weeks ago I decided to replace the rear window wiper blade rubber on the Macan and thought for this one item I will just go down to the local Porsche dealer and get one - when I got there, the new car salesman guy looked very surprised and said we don't have spare parts here any more you will have to go to a warehouse out at Moonah, but before you go there you need to book an appointment with them as they don't normally serve customers - what the $%#@! I bought the same item on eBay for $15.
