Mike D'Silva Posted 27March, 2013 Report Share Posted 27March, 2013 Looking at a 996 MY00 auto... Im in Brisbane and the car is in Sydney.. Chiswick 2046. Who would you recommend that can do a PPI at short notice? (the boxster in Cairns didn't work out... had extensive repairs so I didnt go through with it)
JustJames Posted 27March, 2013 Report Share Posted 27March, 2013 Hi Mike Closest is likely to be Porsche Centre Sydney South If you want to go south of there, contact Andre at the Pit Exchange. Or if you want to go north, give Rob at Autohaus Hamilton a call (you can't expect me to not put in a gentle push, can you?). James
Mike D'Silva Posted 27March, 2013 Author Report Share Posted 27March, 2013 thanks... how important is it to get one? I've always bought cars and bikes going by gut feel. I can tell if cars have had paint and panel before so I don't touch those. Can the PPI tell me if any of the normal 996 timebombs are about to go off? IMS RMS PCV ?? JustJames Posted 27March, 2013 Report Share Posted 27March, 2013 RMS is largely a cosmetic issue. At Autohaus Hamilton M96 engined cars get a new RMS seal whenever the engine and 'box are separated.A PPI should reveal if the IMS bearing has started to head south, as I am told that there is a distinctive bearing noise.I have a clear and obvious bias, but the general consensus seems to be that a PPI is worth doing on any Porsche because a specialist will be able to advise of likely future expenditure.Plenty peeps on here have had PPI's done on cars that they did and (more importantly) did not buy. I'm sure some will be along soon to tell of their experience.Somebody?Anybody?
Mike D'Silva Posted 28March, 2013 Author Report Share Posted 28March, 2013 this is a bit frustrating, and I was contemplating NOT getting a PPI done at all... Seller isnt willing to drive to dee why so autohaus is out.. spoke to rob earlier and he sounded really thorough. Andre at PitExchange is trying to accommodate me by doing it early Tuesday morning but needed car there for whole day. Seller reckons its a bit far for him plus he has meetings and cannot leave his car for the whole day! So is there anywhere closer to Chiswick that you can recommend???? JustJames Posted 28March, 2013 Report Share Posted 28March, 2013 Porsche Centre Sydney South?ETA: Try offering the seller the result of the PPI if you don't take the car. That becomes a worthwhile part of his selling proposition for other prospects if you don't buy the car. That way, there's a good reason for the seller to be a bit more helpful. SteveF Posted 28March, 2013 Report Share Posted 28March, 2013 I recommend you go with the PPI. I did one and ended up not buying as a result. Saved me quite a bit in the long run. Worth the trip to Autohaus
GC9911 Posted 30March, 2013 Report Share Posted 30March, 2013 Seems like there are too many excuses being made for not having a PPI? If I was selling & a PPI was the deal maker & I had nothing to hide I would go with it. If all these Porsche places are too far away where did the guy get the car serviced? not trying to be negative but???
GC9911 Posted 30March, 2013 Report Share Posted 30March, 2013 Both Porsche Centre Willoughby & Porsche Centre Sydney South are about 30 mins from Chiswick, what's the deal with too far?
SteveF Posted 30March, 2013 Report Share Posted 30March, 2013 If you really wanted to get one done you wouldn't worry about the distance. For my PPI I could have gone to a number of places which were much closer to where I live in North West Sydney. As it turns out the owner of the car, who lives in Western Sydney, was happy for me to take the car for the day all the way to the Northern Beaches to James at Autohaus (a round trip of about 100km). It gave me a great opportunity to learn much more about the car and the guys at Autohaus were great. Don't risk it IMO. Do a PPI.
OZ930 Posted 30March, 2013 Report Share Posted 30March, 2013 Is the seller scared of the PPI ?
Mike D'Silva Posted 30March, 2013 Author Report Share Posted 30March, 2013 thanks for all the replies. It is finally being done this Thursday with Andre at The Pit Exchange. (for some reason, I felt more comfortable getting it done by an independent, rather than a porsche dealership) I'm in Brisbane and trying to get this done remotely... I doubt the seller would let me take the car for the day even if I did live in Sydney. It was described to me as immaculate and apart from the bumpers, had never seen paint in its life. When I got there, I could tell immediately, that the bonnet, and front guards had been painted. PLus there is a large amount of paint that has shrunk in the drivers door opening on the sill... it has cracked. Not sure why it was painted. The place he gets it serviced "specialises" in European cars, however when I spoke to his mechanic about the car, he had never heard about issues with the IMS bearing or RMS.... in fact, he didn't even know what a IMS bearing was........ So, I will wait to see what Andre says on Thursday. The car really does present VERY well... from a metre away, you would not be able to see the imperfections... Mike D'Silva Posted 4April, 2013 Author Report Share Posted 4April, 2013 The seller sold the car to someone else before the PPI was done... Guess it wasn't meant to be. He sold it to them because they didn't want to get an inspection done. Now looking at a Cayman S....... in Victoria........

Doish13 Posted 7July, 2013 Report Share Posted 7July, 2013 It's pretty hard selling anything these days leave alone a car. You have not offered him 5 grand "cash" and been disrespectful so you have nothing to apologies for when asking for a PPI. Emotions are a terrible thing sometimes, once your set on something you can really thing irrationally so rest assured not getting the car is a good thing. The correct thing to do would've been to at least give you the courtesy to let you know someone else may buy it. If he didn't extend this you have buckleys in trust in the cars history. Is it for sale still?
