Caver Posted 17April, 2013 Report Share Posted 17April, 2013 I have just stumbled across this disturbing story: http://www.themercury.com.au/article/2013/04/17/377188_tasmania-news.html I know that one of our forum members is taking part in this event. I'm hoping that he's okay. Thoughts are with the driver's family and friends.

tazzieman Posted 17April, 2013 Report Share Posted 17April, 2013 Shocking. RIP to the guy and thoughts go to his & his nav's family. Rallying is extremely dangerous at any age. You don't bounce off a tree - and a rollcage won't help deceleration forces. Rally drivers have bigger nads than circuit racers , IMO. Lots more variables. Some of the targa stages are really rough - tight suspension just makes you get airborne. Our club pres ran off the road at TT couple of years ago and the vehicle (WRX) caught fire. They managed to escape. Despite the inbuilt extinguisher and an external or two , the car was immolated. It's a costly sport in many ways.
Harvs11 Posted 17April, 2013 Report Share Posted 17April, 2013 Very sad end to what should be a great experience. This is a big reminder that high speed on any public road leaves no margin for error. Condolences to the driver's family and a speedy recovery for the nav.

PeterP Posted 17April, 2013 Report Share Posted 17April, 2013 That is incredibly sad, and I feel for his family. It sounds, if the reporting is correct, as if he was going real hard for 4kms into the first stage of a long Targa........very sad indeed.
