Auto trimmer in Melbourne needed to paint terracotta steering wheel

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

My steering wheel is looking pretty worn, from what I can gather its painted terracotta, looks like the color is rubbing off

Can someone recommend a shop that can fix this up? Or any other options?

Obviously having it recovered in black leather would be a better wearing solution but that's not how Porsche made her!

They are called Blackmans from memory but I would definitely try the product Steve Porter mentioned.

Yeh I will do that Jim. I would say this will be a every few years job :) also drivers seat bolster could do with a touch up.

The other big bit of wear is the astray lid. Maybe I can touch that up too. Or this is the alternative....

BM leather creations, he does all the work for Duttons etc.... He is pretty good did a car for me a few years ago.. He's pretty cool to watch, has some real old school techniques to bringing leather back to life..

Amanda, have you tried giving it a clean with warm water, morning fresh and a scrub with medium brush ? To me it just looks dirty..?

It's hard to see from the photo but I was also thinking this might clean up if the right method/product is used. Could be a build of oils/ grime from sweaty hands. Sorry. I don't mean to gross you out.

I cleaned up my red coloured leather lounge with a few years of build up using a leather cleaner from Gainsville. It's a two part kit. Clean then re-seal with a liquid urethane coating. It came up like new.

Ok cool. I thought it looked dirty too but when sitting in front in good light, you can see the color has worn down. Weird thing is that the wear is very uniform on the wheel. It runs around the inside and doesn't look worse in the typical places where you'd expect to see the worse wear.

I will try cleaning it first just to be sure. I want to give the car a clean from tip to toe anyway, not that it's dirty but probably time to condition the leather and clean any marks on it.

I'll also ask Brighton P about it tomorrow. They are RWC and registering it for me.

Ok cool :)

Nathan aka NJPhoto posted a link to the drive clean videos. I found this the other day. So I'm going to order a brush and have a go at clean some marks off the leather. I'll post before and after pics next weekend.

Hi Amanda,

I see in the string of replies some truth In it all. My Company was refered to in one being (New Life Repairs) for leather restoration. True that eventually the colour coat wears away and the leather becomes prone to soiling and further wear. What happens in production of high wear leather is a heavy anti soiling clear coat over the colour base(terracotta ), in time the top finish breaks down as a result of creams, lotion, dust sweat etc.,we are now down to the base coat which is softer and less durable. Renewing the colour coat helps freshen the coating but without the more durable clear top coat it doesn't take long to be back where you started. You can't source the top coat easily because they require a cross linker to activate it and does have Health and Safety issues, professional use only. There are reasons why professionals have an edge. I also find that colours vary so much that you have to adjust the match to allow for some fading etc otherwise terricottas ain't terricottas! My tip prevention via a good protector especially on high wear areas will save you grief long term and professionals like BM leather earn their keep by providing reliable fixes over the life of your Porsche!

  • 2 weeks later...

For what It is worth, I had reason to drop into Gary Blackman in Richmond last week, as I have a wear patch on the drivers seat bolster on my VW R32. Have to say he was fantastic and after looking at it suggested that New Life would be able to assist rather than actually replacing panels on the seat, so really genuine service....will now get new life to sort it out for me....
