ByronBayChris Posted 16August, 2013 Report Share Posted 16August, 2013 The light came on at traffic lights, while the other pic with needle at 3 was engine at 3k rpm A couple of times recently the oil warning light has come on. Gauges seem ok. Can someone comment in the pics?
Russ Posted 16August, 2013 Report Share Posted 16August, 2013 have you physically checked your oil level? maybe a faulty sender (or there's probably a reason and you should speak to a mechanic?)
Russ Posted 16August, 2013 Report Share Posted 16August, 2013 oh, and theres a rennlist article on it - http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/993-forum/722631-oil-warning-light-help.html
wasserkuhl Posted 16August, 2013 Report Share Posted 16August, 2013 I'd try the sender first. Does it use oil at all? It could be the common CEL (Check Engine Light) issue that arrives with worn or failing valve guides.
Chris-p Posted 16August, 2013 Report Share Posted 16August, 2013 Chris, that would worry me. Your oil pressure looks low. Mine is pushing off the scale at 5 at that sort of rpm. I would be getting it looked at. Better to be safe than sorry and poorer...... C
T-Man Posted 16August, 2013 Report Share Posted 16August, 2013 Chris, my money is on the oil pressure sender.
ByronBayChris Posted 16August, 2013 Author Report Share Posted 16August, 2013 I checked the dipstick but cannot see any oil at all. So I rang Louie who had the car recently and he said in 993 he has a hard time seeing fresh oil also...... He is happy with the qty based on what he saw and it doesn't leak too much. I will get it checked in the next few days.... Thx guys.
T-Man Posted 16August, 2013 Report Share Posted 16August, 2013 If you recently had it serviced you will certainly struggle to see fresh oil.Why on earth Porsche chose that colour and design of dip stick is one of those questions that may never be answered. My gauge is like Chris's. Sits at 4-5. However, my temperature has only reached that high under extreme spirited driving during summer temps.I'm still with OP sender. clutch-monkey Posted 16August, 2013 Report Share Posted 16August, 2013 that pressure looks fine for a car at idle and at 3k..? might have to go for a drive to refresh my memory.. hmm hard tasks..
wasserkuhl Posted 17August, 2013 Report Share Posted 17August, 2013 OK. What oil is in it? What is the weight? ie: 20w50 or 15W40 and is it full synthetic? This is the can-of-worms question but it is extremely important to have the right weight and blend in there.
T-Man Posted 17August, 2013 Report Share Posted 17August, 2013 Chris. Took the Porka out today and paid particular attention to the gauges.Cold at idle.At 3000 RPM during a spirited drive.(Sorry about the bad focus)At idle back in the garage
StevepGT3 Posted 17August, 2013 Report Share Posted 17August, 2013 Use a torch when checking the oil , the reflection off the oil makes it easy to see
ByronBayChris Posted 17August, 2013 Author Report Share Posted 17August, 2013 Theo, what is the warning light for? Your pressure stayed much higher all the way thru. Will check again tomorrow. Thx Steve, will get torch
T-Man Posted 17August, 2013 Report Share Posted 17August, 2013 Theo, what is the warning light for? Hey Chris. That is part of PAWS........Porsche Early Warning System. Handbrake! Seriously though, note the oil temp in the last photo. That is after a real cracker of a drive. Last time my temp was like yours I was driving to Canberra through the twisties, in 40 degree heat, with T-2, in second gear with the revs at 5-redline for about 15 minutes!!! I still call OP sender. wasserkuhl Posted 18August, 2013 Report Share Posted 18August, 2013 What oil is in yours Theo? Nice thick mineral(and synthetic) blend I'd suspect? Chris - Change the sender, its a cheap diagnostic start. If no change there, see if you can get it smog tested for exhaust emissions, this will reveal any elevated levels of combusted oil, which may indicated valve guide wear. Need to know what oil is in it as well, if its a thinner flavour I'd recommend draining it and replacing with a thicker flavour. I'd also recommend having the old oil and Filter analysed for wear particles. But I am a bit over-zealous about this type of stuff.
T-Man Posted 18August, 2013 Report Share Posted 18August, 2013 Mobil Semi synth 10/40. Unfortunately the valve guides can be an issue. As Wasser said.......swap out the sender.
