Buying a used Porsche........everyone must have a story!

I've been on the prowl for a 993 for some time now, but seriously hunting for the last few months.

Fairly realistic criteria - C2 coupe, manual, not unreasonable km with some fair service history. Very open to colour choice except for the blue interiors.

Had a look at a few and admittedly kicked a couple of tyres, but never driven a car I wasn't serious about.

So, my story begins. Surfing on carsales I come across a new listing for a nicely presented coupe which seems to fit the bill.

All looked fair and reasonable, price was appropriate, time to make a call!

Car was interstate but that's OK because I've gotten to know someone very knowledgeable in the 993 field who's happy to look at the car for me.

He meets with the owner, gives the car a look over, takes it for a test drives and subsequently sends me some additional photos and we discuss a few things that need looking after.

A few K should get this baby to where I'd initially like it to be.

So I give it a couple of days and ring the owner again who tells me he has had an offer, but did not comit as he was expecting me to call!

We settle on a price, subject to a PPI of course, and I'm as excited as a kid on XMAS day. Document this all on an email and plan to arrange a time for a PPI.

A few hours later i get a call from the owner claiming he had an enquiry on the car and if the car was reasonable they would buy it at my offered price without a PPI!!!!!!!!!!!

Told him I would be a fool not to get an inspection and if the other party was prepared to go down that path "sell them the car".

Talk about being GUTTED!! I was more p-off than disappointed.

Haven't heard from him so the car may be sold or he's concerned that something more serious would show up in a PPI!

AAAAAH! I feel much better now.

This is great therapy.

Thanks for listening.

Any interesting stories out there?

Not that i would advise this, but i did buy my car without a PPI. After looking for about 12 months and seeing a few cars (and talking to a few knowledgable people along the way), I took the plunge and never looked back.

Someone once said to me when you buy a dog, always buy from the breeder, you can see the bloodlines; the same goes for cars, in other words take into account the condition of the sellers other car or cars. This was the case for me anyway, great seller (private not dealer) good clean car, good history etc.

However the best part about my purchase some 7 years ago was when i got home and thoroughly went through the service books and owners manual, i discovered that the delivery date of my car was my birthday.........some things are just meant to be.

Cheers

Danny

Nice Story ending Danny!

I also bought my car without a PPI. I was looking at 993's for some time and had sold my 930 to clear the decks. This tiny little advert without photos appeared during my search, it was advertised in the Sydney Morning Herald, it was expensive but sounded like a good car. Phone calls and email photos later, I made an offer that made sense to me and the owner was in a bit of financial distress and had the car booked to go to auction at Mannheims so he was very motivated. The condition was that I inspected the car to make sure it was what it was being advertised as. So I flew to Sydney with cheques made out to the Finance co and the owner. Over 80% was still going to the finance co after 4 years of lease payments ouch :( Anyway I gave the car a very good look over and could tell that even though the current owner wasnt a car guy it was a good honest car, no accidents with only 77000km on it and good service history. Spoke to the people that had been servicing it and satisfied myself that it was a car worth buying. I just needed to detail it and show it some love. We drove to the bank and paid out the finance, I dropped him back at his office. Filled the tank and drove the car straight back to Melbourne. The only thing I had to do when I got home and got the car inspected for a road worthy was a new set of front discs other than that its been a great car and actually the last couple of SMT's have been enjoying it even more. I also would have to say under normal circumstances I wouldnt buy without a PPI but due to the research I had done on the car and what I saw myself I was prepared to take the risk....

Cheers

Chris

Similar to Froggy's tale (tail?) re: dogs, I've long worked on the basis that you don't buy the <insert object> here, you buy the seller.

This guy was far from an enthusiast. I like the theory!

Dont feel hard done by, Toto.

993 man is getting hard to find.

That is because they are a good car.

The bloke sounds like he needed the money and went for the quick sale..

Its his car and he can sell it how he wants.

Something will come up.

At the price they want for a 993 man, you may want to have a look at some other models. :)

Wasn't meant to be Toto.

I can share a similar story.

After searching for a car for a few months I've found one that was of interest and it was interstate. Exchanged about 20 emails and few phone calls with the seller and in the end agreed on the price subject to a clean PPI report.

I organized for a PPI to be done at a Porsche specialist, seller dropped off the car for inspection and I received the report same day and was happy to proceed. Later that day seller calls me to tell me he sold the car.

Apparently a bloke walked off the street into the specialist's shop asking if they knew of any cars for sale and they pointed to the one they were inspecting for me saying it was there for a PPI, They put him in touch with the owner and the deal was done.

I ended up buying another car 2months later which was a better deal and in some respects more suitable than the first car.

993s with manual box are rare but I am sure you will find one and as in my case it may end up being a better car than the one you missed.

The story continues..............!!!

I've noticed that the add for the 993 I started this thread with is still on Carsales. It's been about three weeks now since the owner pulled the deal and I figured he hadn't bothered to pull the add yet.

My mate from Sydney rings me today and has the same observation. So I decide to give the guy a call and see what's going on.

He actually sounded a little excited to hear from me. Claims the guy that wanted to buy without a PPI tried to shortchange him on the deal when he picked up the car and it all went south.

I thought it strange he didn't call me as I was prepared to give him my "hard earned" back then? Apparently he dropped his mobile in the washing machine and lost the number! Either that or he was embarrassed to call me after he reneged on the initial deal!

I tell him I need to consider a couple of things and we'll talk tomorrow. i'm still interested in car but he would have to agree to a PPI and I won't tolerate any games.

One side of me is leaning towards seeking a little self satisfaction and renegotiating the original deal, which is now null and void, whilst the other side is saying to just buy the damn car and hit the Hume back to Melbourne.

Decisions, decisions............

Hmmmm...the story smells a bit fishy to me.

"Dropped his mobile in the washing machine" sounds similar to "the dog ate my homework" :D

If the car is in good nick then how come it is still available when there is such a shortage on the market. Definitely do the PPI IMHO.

The dog actually ate a few K out of my cheque book since the original deal :D

27 x 993's on the market

17 of which are manual

13 of which are coupes

Take out the 7 Turbos

Leaves 6 cars

Can't afford anything with an "S" which reduces the choice a little more!

If the PPI comes through OK then it's a goer.

If not.........I guess I wait a little longer!!!

Gee thats a bit of a saga isnt it. I guess the PPI will tell the story on the car but my natural tendency would be to renegotiate a bit harder :)

Good luck with it and look forward to a happy ending which ever way it goes....

Just about there!!!!!!!!!!

Got the results of the PPI on Tuesday. Compression and leak-down were great, everything else was as expected with only a couple of typically minor things to be addressed.

Deal is done, deposit in his account, insurance paid and plane tickets are booked.

I'm flying up to Sydney with my 18 year old tomorrow morning, 6AM flight, and we are doing the road trip back!

Looking forward to finally getting this baby home.

Excellent news and congratulations!

Enjoy the road trip back. Its actually a terrific thing to do as you learn quite a bit about the car on such a drive.

Looking forward to some pics and to actually see the car soon.

Have a safe trip.

Cheers

Actually I bought 993 used one. I didn’t have any problems with it. Price was also fair. It is in good condition even now.

Really Karla? And here I was thinking you were just a spammer!!

What year? Does it have the aircooled V-8 upgrade?

Love to see some photos.

I've been looking at a 1962 356B which is currently on Ebay. There was a "Spam" version of the same car too, however, I was able to track down the real car and went to see it last Sunday. It looks and drives okay, but the auction is shortly to end and I don't have time for a professional inspection. At the moment, there have been zero bids on the auction after nearly 6 days. Potential buyers are, no doubt, priming their sniper applications for a last minute attack??? That's if there are any potential buyers.

BTW, I've been getting good advice from PFA member "wasserkuhl". Thanks mate!

Fast forward to early this morning. The owner phones me and says that there is a buyer who is interested and wants the car removed from the auction. The current owner knows I've inspected the car and has called me to see what I want to do. I haven't called back yet.

So, is he bluffing to try and get a bid? Do I tell him to let the auction run? (even though I'm probably not going to bid above reserve) Do I say "let the other guy buy it" and gauge reaction? Do I ask what the offer is? This really is the fun part! :-)

Hey Caver, what you do really depends on how serious you are about buying. It is a nice looking little car but I would make sure you get a PPI from an expert in this type of Porsche as there are a few unknowns as we discussed. I believe the price advertised on eBay is too high so maybe tell him what you are willing to pay and see what happens.
