Robert930 Posted 28November, 2016 Report Share Posted 28November, 2016 (edited) Hi All, I'm after a steering rod for my 924, it's the one inside the engine bay (from firewall to rack) Edited 28November, 2016 by Robert930
TINGY Posted 28November, 2016 Report Share Posted 28November, 2016 Would a 944 rod fit? I heard these are expensive and hard to get.
tazzieman Posted 28November, 2016 Report Share Posted 28November, 2016 944 no good . You need a VW super beetle one , take it to a machine shop and get them to press the old UJs off and use the VW ones on the Porsche rod. And of course get the UJ alignment 100%.You will love the tight new steering feel! Robert930, Ozvino and Rob
bear924 Posted 28November, 2016 Report Share Posted 28November, 2016 (edited) I tackled this project last year, not entirely happy with my outcome. After doing research etc I decided to purchase a shaft and Borgeson uni joints. I secured this idea from other websites (see below) as it is a common fix in the US. Problem is that on RH drive cars, the shaft angle is too tight for the uni joints. I played with my setup and eventually made it 90% right however suspect I'll be attacking this project again once my engine rebuild is complete as it still catches on the joints and grabs slightly.I rang multiple places in an attempt to do what tazzieman suggested however nobody would touch the job. If you find someone who is willing to do the job please let me know and I'll send my old one to them as well. One shop wouldn't even cut the shaft I purchased for the Borgeson set up above... seem the word 'steering' makes businesses very nervous. The only option that I can see now is to purchase a new one. http://www.porscheshop.co.uk/acatalog/porsche_924_steering.html#a9315 . The price (which seems high however I can't find any other supplier) of these seems to automatically adjust with exchange rate. I was planning on using a VPN connection and see if that gives a better price. Ozvino Posted 29November, 2016 Report Share Posted 29November, 2016 @Bear924 I am not sure a VPN connection will get you a cheaper UK Price - you actually get the part VAT Free being outside the EU. Parts from the UK havent been this cheap in a long time. As someone relatively new to the RHD 924T I can see why just a handful remain - the ability to secure many parts for the 931 is set to push almost all of the marginal cars off the road, I can see just a handful remaining. I gather you guys have faced the challenge around Transmission mounts for the 931- they make the steering rod look value for money.Has anyone got experience with these guys? http://en.prekom.si/porsche-parts.html they seem to have some interesting stuff, but nothing really on price edgy
tazzieman Posted 29November, 2016 Report Share Posted 29November, 2016 Silly prices for 944/951 mounts too.Ghetto fix is fill the voids with urethane. It works!
bear924 Posted 29November, 2016 Report Share Posted 29November, 2016 Tazzieman - thanks for the heads up. I will give them a ring. Are they able to supply all the bits? I wasn't even able to find the knuckles anywhere.Ozvino - I'm just impressed to see other Porsche people who appreciate the 924. I do have the view that owning a 924 is towards the top of the difficult list of Porsche ownership because nobody wants to know about them. I presume you know about Ideola's garage http://garage.ideola.com/ . He is now providing parts that were NLA a few years back... quite possibly saved my 924 as it required a number of those NLA parts that I'm using to rebuild with now.Lastly. With the UK. What I found was that I recorded the price in pound and AUD... a few months later when the exchange rate improved I thought "you ripper, I'll buy that while it is cheaper". When I went to buy it, the pound price had gone up and the AUD price was the same. Not sure if it was coincidence... maybe they import them? It is on my to-do list to determine. As I said , it's a straight swap for the VW UJs onto the 924 shaft. Ozvino
bear924 Posted 30November, 2016 Report Share Posted 30November, 2016 I'm so glad I found this post and replied, finding a supplier of the knuckles significantly changes the difficultly of this job. Thanks tazzieman!
Timm Posted 14June, 2021 Report Share Posted 14June, 2021 Reviving this thread with an update on the suitability of Borgeson joints and shaft for RHD 944s. @bear924 kindly sent out the joints and shaft he bought for his 924 and I am now running them in my 951 with good results. As mentioned above, the angle is very tight on the RHD, and the joints required a fair bit of dremelling to give enough clearance and not bind during rotation. bear924

My steering shaft gives a clicking noise when turning. Problem seems to be at the U-joint. Can I simply replace with the Borgeson joint on the existing shaft? Any other adaptation required for smooth operation?
