Hi guys , just wondering what people's thoughts are and if it's financially feasible to import an early 80's sc from the states. What are the do's and donts? Any help would be great ! 

Welcome... Its a good idea but the exchange rate at the moment may make it more feasible to get one here, by the time its on the road the costs ad up quickly...

Negatives:

US spec Porsches generally have less HP than euro ones..., 

You'll need to keep your fingers crossed to save $$$$ or $$$$$ over James's, if your US one has the slightest of imperfections.

Definitely factor in a lot more on top for shipping and unforeseen expenses.., unless you can get something for an obvious steal, don't bother. The importing game is generally a role of the dice.

You've been given some good advice...I'll add some more

- if importing, get a professional to help you.  There are several companies that specialise in this

- rust rust rust - not all states are equal.  More cars are 'California cars' than were ever sold in Californa.  It's only a California car if it spent the whole time in the state.   Even then it's really southwest cars you want - so California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico etc.   Avoid north Eastern/ mid western cars.  Lots of cars start in LA and the migrate to Ohio and still get called CA cars.  You need documentation which might mean car fax records or a continuous history (service records etc) to show the car always lived in a certain area.

- as already said engine outputs are lower in many cases due to emissions.  Also understand that 'euro' cars grey imported into the USA are 'federalised' to be legal which may include some undesirable mods.  No hard and fast rule, but work could be shoddy.

- dealing with sellers on eBay etc may evaporate any price advantage because guys in Europe are also on the hunt for USA cars.  You might have better luck with pelican for sale sections, Porsche club adverts or even hitting the ground and going to things like the Pomona swap meet or a big cars and coffee meet like the ones Pelcian organises.  

My car came from the USA and I was actively looking for one over there (visiting dealerships and things like that) but in the end buying one already here worked out better.

Ha the beauty of old cars - no electronics to snoop on or disable.

been sayin' for years for people to not do embarrassing things in front of web cams.  But they do it anyway then post it to the intertubes to save others the trouble of exploiting security failures.

The only way to consider buying a car from the USA is if you have somebody on the ground you trust to find you the right car. If you read some of the threads on the forum, people have thought they have found the right car but on closer inspection, have found the car to not be as good as first thought.

inot always. Ive had 2 purchaded from usa. Sight unseen.  Lots of photos and video.  Even more personal checks on the web regarding the person selling.  Cars were both crackers. 

i used usa to aus as the importer both times. Would use them again

and finally.........dont buy anything from florida. Never. Ever.

Also.... Love all the risks/issues listed above and I'll add, I really hate those stupid bumper stops the yanks add on to their cars, there's a cost to remove that. Oh, and they're LHD, did you want to convert to RHD? More pesos for this!! Lower spec is the big one too!! 

As has been said, there's alot of other costs to factor in...GST, import tax, shipping costs, certificates to get, poaperwork to complete... I've heard its a minefield and frustrating if never been done. Get someone to help you if jumping through bureaucratic  hoops is not your thing ...

Just did this with a 911 3.2 1988 and a 3.0lt 930 1978 Turbo for California . Just have a clear idea of the landed cost and the duty .

If you need to know what charges you will incur send me a PM . I personally think getting the right car and a great agent ( to ship , prep and clear ) are the most vital steps.

Paying a few extra bucks here and there make the difference as condition can vary example : neat SC $30,000 --- Clean SC $32,000 --- Super Clean SC $33,000 follow me ?

If you do your research so you know what you are doing, the costs aren't high and it really is a pretty straight forward process. Myself and others have written about this on other threads, but whatever you do, don't declare the value you paid for the car. Go for the method that allows you to get a dockside valuation. Remember, dockside valuation by the very nature of it is a valuation of a car that is illegal to drive in Australia. They are not allowed to value it based on what it would be worth once registered. So how much is a car worth that cannot be driven on the road? There are a couple of other perfectly legal tricks that also get the value down. I have had $100k cars valued at dockside at under $30k. It will save you many $1000's.

I have been watching the USA market (65-89) for the last 12 months and it seems to me that generally speaking the prices have moved upward to a point where it does not seem financially viable.

Record movements of cars (out of the USA) have been reported by the shipping company that I use.

I would suggest that Australia is a pretty good place to buy a 911 at the moment.
