is it worth me importing my Porsche 928 S2 from the UK?

Recommended Posts

hello

I've just joined up to see if its worth me importing my porsche 928 S2 from the UK into Australia. I'm worried about selling it on and whether i'll get a decent price - i am not sure if people are put off by imports. The car is rust free, has a full service history - porsche specialist and main dealer. Its a 4.7litre V8 manual. Its not perfect but in very good condition - some very minor bits to make it perfect. I have been thinking of changing cars for a while but thought about importing it to tide me over until i find something i like. Any advice would be gratefully recieved.

many thanks

Simon

Hi Simon,

Wish you had a 996 or 997 turbo to import. If you are doing it as a personal import, you won't have to pay any duties/gst etc from memory. Put it on ro-ro, about $2,000. Paperwork etc, customs should be another $1k. And then engineers report ($500-$700) and some changes up to $1000..,.

What's a 928 S2 worth? Checking carpoint.com.au now...waiting..,waiting.., ok not sure. Can't find any 928 S2's.., in any case, i am sure you'd be able to sell it for 50% less pretty quick.

Being an import, it does affect it's price of course.

If you can, sell it in the UK, buy a nice 996 twin turbo (Black/manual) for 20,000 GBP, stay in europe another year with it.., go down to the stelvio pass italia and swiss alps every month, import it to australia, and ill pay you $45-$50k AUD, you'll make about $10-$15000. :)

Simon, I'd consult Australian Customs about any duties and GST charges. You also need their specific advice re which refrigerant is in your airconditioning. You don't want the wrong one or they'll refuse entry and you have to send it back to get discharged!! 928s are available here. Do your sums carefully before importing. Also if you go to the Association of Motoring Clubs (Victoria) site at aomc.asn.au there is a link to a Customs Powerpoint presentation on importing cars.

Cheers

rps911 thanks for that - when you say sell pretty quickly for 50% less, what do you mean? 50% less than what (am I being stupid). I wish i had a 996 turbo myself! Do you think being an import the price would be a lot lower than an australian model?

cheers

Simon

I think what Robert means is that you would be able to sell the imported 928 for 50% less than the local cars and still turn a little profit.

Next time someone in the UK or US bitch about the price of Porsches over there I'm going to lose it. I love this country but I hate GST, LCT, FBT........etc. All dirty 3 letter words!

Yep. I really can't believe what manner of ass hattery and douche baggery goes on for us to have to pay what we do for a well made automobile (ie any Porsche with the letters 'GT' on its ass)

Also, I think 50% discount is pretty generous isn't it for an import? More like 35% ?

It's not so much that the new cost of cars in Aussie is so very fierce, it's more the other side of the coin that pushes the prices down in the UK.

If you look at the Porsche forum on Pistonheads, every other thread is by some numpty who wants to buy a Porsche - anything from a basic Boxster to a GTx model - and worrying that they will lose when they come to re-sell in two years. It leaves me scratching my head in bewilderment - if you treat ownership of a car like ownership of white goods, it will cost you money.

Agreed.

All are depreciating assets unless something like a Faz 250 GTO, e type raced by jack brabham or some rare exotic 550, type 64 or...959?

Even then, driving them at all, let alone on public roads sure aint going to ADD value to them.

Thinking some more, I can't imagine 928's still selling at a price that doesn't amount to a sizeable risk shipping one over from the uk to sell here at a profit...

Still have to pack, ship, collect at destination, arrange ADR compliance, roadworthy and reg, insurance and then list for sale and go through the ass hattery of a car sale.

Are there buyers for imports of these models now given their age.

Are parts available?

Much as I loved em when they were in production, esp 5.0 928s4 manual, I always feel a model is graveyarded when it is discontinued, at best has a quickly diminishing shelf life...

More trouble than worth?

A guy at work was looking at this - Aussie delivered and has all the papers and historical service records....

Wouldn't this be an easier option?

(sorry Stephen if I let the cat out of the bag)

  • 7 months later...

I am wondering if he is keen because it's a manual. They seem very rare here and so import maybe only option, apart from waiting a lot for one to pop up.

As to resale...I think buying a car to sell on, is just not that smart. Get the car you want, enjoy it and if you have to sell it, then maybe you should work out a little better what you are wanting from a car in the first place, so you are not in that position. Shares, art, property, etc, are investments, but cars are for driving, pure and simple. I can't even imagine wanting to sell mine, ever. I can imagine owning more but buying to sell just doesn't make sense to me

I imported my car from the uk and, unless you have something special, it s not going to work out as a profitable transaction. But if you have a car you like and want to keep, it's a better method than selling that and trying to find one the same here. But I stress 'want to keep', because if you do eventually want to sell it, it's going to have an import stigma that some people will want to stay away from. For some people, a mph speedo is too much to deal with.
