How long is a piece of string?

It all depends on how far you go, and are you just dropping the car off to someone and they do everything or are you pulling out the engine yourself. Lots of variables to consider.

If you want a ball park, I would say $10-15k, but others may have something more accurate.

Tnx for reply mfx yeh I know what you mean, I have been told a worse case scenario for a full rebuild factory standards no extra horse power etc, for them to do complete job including remove & replace approx 80hrs labour + parts $ 30-$35k what are your thoughts it seems bloody rich to me, but hey I'm not a Porsche mechanic

top end $10k when I last asked -  top and bottom $30k. Autohaus were quoting me $40k for a turbo engine...

Might be worth shipping it to  Adelaide - a couple on here would know of shops that would do it for less I am sure.

They all smoke sometimes on start up due to the oil tank being higher than the horizontal cylinders so that's not something to be worried about, it's just an interesting design quirk!

A better assessment of engine condition would be to carefully measure it's oil consumption, do a leak down test or even a compression test.

Most likely it will show it could use a top end rebuild involving the reconditioning the heads and a bit of a reseal while you're at it. I think the going rate for this type of freshen up is around $12k (I'm sure someone here can speak first hand)

If it still runs strong and doesn't use much oil, I wouldn't be in any rush to do anything (Porsche say up to 1.5 litres per thousand is OK!)

Also keep in mind that these things aren't daily drivers and generally only do a few thousand km a year so if it's in similar condition to most 200,000km 3.2's it will be still running just as well in 10 years time!

As for a full rebuild, people quote prices from $25k to $30k due to the horrendous price of engine parts and the horrendous amount of labour that goes into stripping, cleaning, checking, setting and assembling.

I suggest you get a second opinion or three before you do anything.

Only 1 place to shop in Adelaide. Buik Motorwerks. Still, nothing Porsche is cheap.  Perhaps you could start by getting it inspected by a local independent Porsche shop. Mine blows a bit of smoke on startup sometimes. By all accounts, it's normal.

If your car has been regularly maintained, 200,000 k's shouldn't be bothering it. Maybe you need to use it more often and blow that carbon out

It staggers me as to how expensive these engines are to rebuild. It is after all a fairly simple design.

Persoanlly, and if you could to, I would be doing it in my garage (if indeed I did have a 911 :)  but same for any other engine too!), save for any machining... but I understand few have the time, patience or skill for this approach.

You would think a flat six with single overhead cams would be simple but they have excelled themselves at breaking it up into many many parts with many many machined faces that must seal.  Also how many cars have 8 main bearings LOL!

I'm working on spending around $13,000 for parts and sub contracted specialist works like the head reconditioning and resizing the rods for example.

Oh and you need a special engine cradle to mount it on your engine stand too!

Yes, not cheap!

it's all about the incidental knowledge too - that you get from years of rebuilding these engines

things like how to get case halves to seal, how not to machine them, what oil pump to use, what's the best engine case for each capacity, how big is too big for pistons etc etc. When doing a gearbox how it's possble to put the diff in upside down and end up with 4 reverse gears and 1 forward

If you have the parts there are a few people on the Darkweb..aka real world network who will build for a reasonable hourly rates…  I would how ever just be compression testing and driving till its broke
