finnystew Posted 12November, 2017 Report Share Posted 12November, 2017 To my knowledge the later S, S2 and turbo models came fitted with airbags. However I cannot find any for sale in Australia, and they are common on American trading sites.Does anyone own a 944 fitted with airbags? Or where they not in Australian models because it wasn't mandated by law.
Buchanan Automotive Posted 12November, 2017 Report Share Posted 12November, 2017 I regards to R/H/D Australian delivered Porsche, the first year model of the 944 series to receive even one air bag was the 1993 year model 968 , the 1992 year model 968 still retained the "non" air bag steering wheel .So in other words, there was "NO" 944 / 944S / 944S2 / 951 models that were delivered new for the R/H/D Australian market with air bagsNote } The 1993 year model 968 only received a drivers ( steering wheel ) air bag , I know because I was working at a Sydney Porsche dealership when these cars were new & I own a 1993 Aust delivered 968 The above also applies to the 928GTS as well I just had a thought , you might be confusing the "air bags" with ABS , because ABS became standard on all 944S2 from 1990 onwards , the 951 had ABS as standard from 1987 & from 1987 to 1989 ABS was an option for the 944S & 944S2 , naturally the 968 had ABS as standard as well RegardsBruce Buchanan
finnystew Posted 12November, 2017 Author Report Share Posted 12November, 2017 Thanks for the response @Buchanan Automotive.I dont believe i am confusing the two. The later models definitely came with airbags, just not in Australia

All of which I’ve found on eBay. One wonders if you could make a cutout in an older 944 dash for the airbag and then add a airbag steering wheel. https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com.au%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F161394934893https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com.au%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F263023856291https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com.au%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F192242137009https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com.au%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F390252169895Items I believe you would need for retrofitting
brian in buddina Posted 12November, 2017 Report Share Posted 12November, 2017 Finnystewbuy your girl friend:a racing helmet with a full face guard & neck restraintracing seats with a full 5 point harnessand a roll cagemuch safer and you can use all this stuff in the car too
ANF Posted 12November, 2017 Report Share Posted 12November, 2017 If a 944 did indeed have an airbag the chances of it now functioning correctly (or at all) would most likely be remote! If the worst happens the integrity of the car will save you...... Or do one point from Brian's response above, a race harness will stop you moving, thus negating the need for one....

Although I am worried about the head and neck being subject to a lot of Gs in a head on with a 5 point harness
TINGY Posted 13November, 2017 Report Share Posted 13November, 2017 The way i'm seeing it you have 2 choices, new girl or different car, and i dare say you will probably go the latter
ANF Posted 13November, 2017 Report Share Posted 13November, 2017 The chances of anything actually happening are infinitesimal. If you are that worried find a 968?I survived a roll over off a cliff in my 97 Mercedes where the airbags failed to deploy (a fairly decent front end impact too) and I walked away unscathed. Not saying all will be as this, but the 944 structure would be a fairly sound one too.If the choice was between a lesser car with airbags and a better car without them, I would always choose the later..... finnystew Posted 13November, 2017 Author Report Share Posted 13November, 2017 im not a big fan of the porsche 968 rear and it cant be driven on Ps. Also a bit expensivemy girlfriend was in a pretty bad head on from oncoming traffic and its arguable that the airbags saved her life.
ANF Posted 13November, 2017 Report Share Posted 13November, 2017 There's probably not much that can sway that then. Putting one in a 944 sounds way too expensive and problematic. It could also make the car illegal in this country? You may need to look for an alternative?

TINGY Posted 13November, 2017 Report Share Posted 13November, 2017 grey imports are getting easier. Could import from the UK?For the money you will spend on putting airbags in a 944 you could spend the same money on a 996, big time bang for buck, whoops p plates, that won't work.Save your money and when you get off your p's buy a Porsche with airbags, take the advice of the people on here who have bothered to respond to you, lot's of wisdom on here and from what i have found most everyone will be trying to help you make an informed decision.Good luck with it, big decisions ahead for you mate
ANF Posted 13November, 2017 Report Share Posted 13November, 2017 I thought japan drove on the leftThey do, but most if not all exotic imports are LHD, odd I know but I think it was something to do with the exclusiveness of them...
SteveF Posted 13November, 2017 Report Share Posted 13November, 2017 I reckon you should look at the Boxster then. Everybody wins.
