Denso air con compressor

I had my Denso air compressor rebuilt a couple years ago and its now not blowing cold air again. Went to a air con specialist and the recomendation is to replace the compressor.
My car is a 1988 944s.

The original Denso air compressor was a 471-0128

Looking online the compatible replacement Denso is a R02946

At present I am only able to find this model part number in the US. Is anyone aware of an Australian supplier that I should check for local stock?

Brian,

Does the compressor still feel smooth when you turn it over by hand?  (You have to hold the front plate to turn the compressor over otherwise you are just freewheeling the pulley.)

If it does feel fine, it's most likely the front seal simply needs to be replaced. Is the back of the pulley wet with oil? If you are willing to give this a go, this is reasonably straight forward and would take about about 2 hours and about $25 in seals from eBay and about $50 of Denso oil.  Youtube has many DIY videos to assist.  Just check you put the front seal in the right way.  Ask me how I know that....

If you really need to replace it, again eBay is as good a place to start as any.

The cheapest replacement will be achieved if you buy a compressor with a Denso 10P15E base unit and swap over your existing manifold and pulley/clutch unit so it fits your car.  Or just buy one set up for your particular car!

Thanks Peter.

I didn’t test it, but the air con man said it did not spin free. He implied that the axle or internals were damaged.
I have checked online and the only hits so far are from the southern US, which involve the shipping cost, time & exchange rate.

FYI, last year I got a genuine Denso compressor for the 996 (p/n 996 126 011 52, Denso 7SB16C) for $565 from Lucas at Clickable Automotive.  No affiliation, just a happy customer, worth a call or an email perhaps.  He's been able to supply most genuine Porsche and OEM parts I've been looking for at great prices.

Hey Brian, did you get a compressor?  I have one that was removed from my 930 by a PO and has been sitting in a box ever since.  Don’t know it’s condition internally but it turns over by hand without making horrible noises

Thanks

No I haven’t done anything on that front.
Do you have a model number to confirm if its compatible to fit for in my 944?
