sleazius Posted 23September, 2022 Report Share Posted 23September, 2022 Not really a surprise but another article saying the EU wants AU to get rid of LCT as part of the trade agreement. Bit of a nothing burger at this point, but for anyone who is interested. *if you don't have SMH just open it in an incognito or private window* https://www.smh.com.au/politics/federal/eu-wants-luxury-car-tax-to-go-in-give-and-take-on-trade-deal-20220920-p5bjfx.html Raven

JWM Posted 24September, 2022 Report Share Posted 24September, 2022 It will go for sure imo … It’s all about playing the game to see what we can get in return now: “Australia’s automotive industry peak body has suggested it could be scrapped in exchange for better market access for agricultural industries.” Raven
sleazius Posted 24September, 2022 Author Report Share Posted 24September, 2022 I too don't think it will be scrapped, they'll probably just offer up the %5 import duty like they have with every other trade agreement. The only difference here is the EU has high tariffs on almost everything we export - minerals, gas, food, and they're all 12% or higher. If the Australian government had any balls at all they'd stick it to gas producers in this country, then get the EU to drop their import tariffs on gas. That alone would make up for $1B in lost LCT dozens of times over annually . Unfortunately that will never happen, because the people in charge are beholden to commercial interests and screw everyone else. *Resource producing companies in Norway are taxed at 51% (on top of 27% ordinary tax rates) - haven't seen any of them pack up shop and leave. JWM Posted 24September, 2022 Report Share Posted 24September, 2022 I would have thought LNG tariffs might be on the table given the current situation in Europe... Agree no balls to do anything about taxing them here though … Chalmers wet his pants when Garnaut mentioned MRRT the other week … tomo
